What red clover extract is
Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a meadow plant from the pea family. Its flowering tops contain isoflavones: plant compounds shaped a little like the body's own oestrogen. That is why they are called phytoestrogens, meaning plant oestrogens. Red clover supplies four of them: biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein. Soy supplies only the last two. That difference is the practical reason many people weigh red clover against soy isoflavones before choosing.
Standardisation tells you more than the milligrams on the front
A pack that says 1000 mg red clover says very little on its own. What counts is how much isoflavone the daily dose provides. A clear label states an extract standardised to a fixed share of isoflavones, often 8%, or gives the isoflavone amount in milligrams per serving. Products made from dried, powdered flower instead of a concentrated extract usually contain far less. If a label shows neither a percentage nor a milligram figure, you have nothing to compare.
The form changes your daily routine, not the plant itself:
- Capsules and tablets: a fixed dose you can read off the label, easiest to keep consistent.
- Tinctures and drops: flexible dosing, but a strong herbal taste and often an alcohol base.
- Tea and dried flower: pleasant to drink, isoflavone content unknown.

Be honest with yourself about the evidence: the NHS notes that red clover contains plant hormones acting somewhat like oestrogen, but that the benefits are not established and the right dose is uncertain. Follow the dose on the label of the product you buy and do not exceed it. UK supplements are commonly built around a standardised extract that provides a set amount of isoflavones per daily serving, which is why the isoflavone figure matters more than the total plant milligrams. Doubling up on two different red clover products makes your intake impossible to track. Stick to one product, and if you are unsure, ask your pharmacist.
With a meal is the usual advice, mainly because it is gentler on the stomach. The time of day matters less than doing it at the same moment every day. Isoflavone levels in the body rise and fall within hours, so consistency beats timing. If your product is split into two servings, spacing them roughly twelve hours apart keeps intake even. Pick an anchor you already have, such as breakfast, and attach it to that.
