Teasel root: species, forms and what the label should tell you
Teasel is a tall, prickly biennial with cone-shaped flower heads. Supplements use the root, usually lifted in autumn when it is at its thickest. The dried heads were once used to raise the nap on woollen cloth, a job called fulling. That is where the name Fuller's teasel comes from.
Two plants share one common name
Labels matter more here than in most herb categories. European products are made from Dipsacus fullonum, also sold as Dipsacus sylvestris or wild teasel. Asian products use Dipsacus asper, the root listed in Chinese and Korean pharmacopoeias as Dipsaci radix and known as Xu Duan. They share a family and a common name, not the same tradition of use. So read the Latin name on the pack. If it says only teasel root, you cannot tell what you are buying. Three forms, three different jobs
Teasel reaches you as a liquid, a capsule or loose dried root. They differ in strength, in taste and in how much work they ask of you.
- Tincture: a liquid extract in alcohol, dosed in drops. The strength is printed as a ratio such as 1:3 or 1:5. A 1:3 extract holds more root per millilitre than a 1:5, so a drop from one brand is not a drop from another.
- Capsules: a fixed amount of root powder or dried extract. No taste, no alcohol, easy to keep consistent day to day.
- Dried cut root: the lowest cost per gram, but it needs a decoction. Simmer it for twenty to thirty minutes. A short steep will not pull much out of woody root material.
If you avoid alcohol, glycerine based drops are the alternative. They taste sweeter and pull a slightly different set of plant compounds, so treat them as their own thing rather than a like-for-like swap. Compare the liquid extract format against a capsule before you commit to a bottle.

Labels differ, so follow the one in front of you. The common pattern is to start with a very low number of drops in a glass of water and increase gradually over days rather than starting at the maximum. Drops are usually taken away from meals. Shake the bottle first, and do not add the drops to hot water. Because extract strengths differ between brands, never carry a drop count over from one bottle to another.
Root is woody, so hot water alone does little. Put roughly one to two teaspoons of dried cut root in a pan with about 500 ml of cold water, bring it to the boil, then let it simmer gently for twenty to thirty minutes before straining. That slow simmer is what makes a decoction different from a tea. Loose root is the cheapest form per gram, but it is also the least precise, since each batch of root varies.
Herbal routines are slow by nature. Expect to use teasel consistently for several weeks before you can judge whether it fits you, and treat anything faster as unusual rather than expected. We will not promise a specific outcome or a timeline: teasel has no authorised health claims in Great Britain, and inventing one would not help you. The ratio describes how much plant material went into how much liquid. In a 1:3 extract, one part dried root is extracted into three parts liquid; in a 1:5, the same root is spread over five parts. So a 1:3 is more concentrated, and the same number of drops delivers more root material. The alcohol percentage matters too, because different plant compounds dissolve at different strengths. This is why two teasel tinctures at the same price can be very different products, and why we only stock ones that declare both figures.
