Small ingredients decide whether a supplement fits

Most products fail on details, not on the main nutrient. Capsule shells often use gelatine from pork or beef. Vitamin D3 is usually made from lanolin, the grease from sheep's wool, while D3 from lichen is plant sourced. Omega-3 normally comes from fish oil, and algae oil delivers the same EPA and DHA without fish. Herbal tinctures are often extracted with alcohol, which matters on a halal diet. Collagen is an animal protein by definition, so plant-based alternatives combine amino acids with vitamin C instead.

Forms that make a dietary choice easier

• HPMC capsules: a shell of plant cellulose, the standard swap for gelatine, so they belong with our supplements without gelatine.

Who this collection suits

It suits you if a dietary rule already narrows your options, and you would rather not compare twenty labels yourself. On a low-carbohydrate plan, gummies and flavoured powders are the usual stumbling block, which is why our Keto-friendly selection sits separately. On a plant-based diet, vitamin B12 and iodine deserve attention, because plant foods supply little of either. In the UK, the NHS advises 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day during autumn and winter for everyone, whatever they eat.

Two honest points. First, a supplement adds to your food, it does not replace a varied diet, and a dietary label is not a quality mark on its own. Second, most nutrients build up slowly: give a new product two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge it. Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, and iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, but only when your intake was genuinely short.
