Berberine is a bright yellow alkaloid, a natural plant compound, found in the root and bark of plants such as Berberis aristata (Indian barberry), common barberry, goldenseal and Amur cork tree. Most capsules sold here do not contain ground plant material. They contain a standardised extract, often 97 to 98 percent berberine hydrochloride, so the amount per capsule is predictable. What we may and may not say about berberine
In the UK berberine is sold as a food supplement, not as a medicine. No health claims for berberine are authorised, so we make none, and a label should not either. EFSA has a draft opinion on plant preparations containing berberine open for consultation, and the UK Committee on Toxicity has reviewed it. We mention this openly, because it is the kind of thing you want to know before you start a three month routine.
Absorption explains why the dosing looks odd
Plain berberine is absorbed poorly and leaves the body quickly. Two practical things follow. Research protocols split the daily amount over two or three moments with meals, instead of one large dose. And most capsules sit at 500 mg, because that is the unit used in studies. Larger single doses mainly raise the chance of loose stools or a heavy stomach, the complaint people report most often in the first weeks.
The forms differ in absorption, not in origin
- Berberine HCl: the salt used in nearly all human research, and the reference point for dosing.
- Dihydroberberine: a reduced form that crosses the gut wall more easily, so labels use far smaller amounts.
