Betaine HCL is not the same as TMG
Betaine HCL, or betaine hydrochloride, is betaine bound to hydrochloric acid: the same acid the stomach makes itself. Betaine occurs naturally in beetroot, spinach and wheat products. On labels you meet betaine in two forms that look alike but do different jobs.
Betaine anhydrous, also sold as TMG or trimethylglycine, is the neutral form. It carries the only approved betaine claim: betaine contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism. Betaine HCL is the acidic salt, and it is taken with food rather than for that claim. To be straight with you: there is no claim approved by the European food safety authority (EFSA) for betaine HCL and stomach acidity. It is a long-established ingredient in mealtime formulas, and that is why people buy it, but the effect has not been assessed as an approved claim. The numbers matter too. A 750 mg capsule of betaine hydrochloride supplies roughly 570 mg betaine, well under the 1.5 g of betaine that the homocysteine claim is based on. So if homocysteine is your goal, betaine anhydrous is the more logical buy. If you want the acidic form to take with meals, you are on the right page.
