What L-glutamine is
L-glutamine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks your body uses to make protein. It is the most abundant free amino acid in the body, and your body produces it itself, which is why it sits in the non-essential group of our amino acid range. You will often see it called conditionally essential. That means the body may use more than it makes during illness, injury or a heavy training block. Supplements exist for exactly that gap.
Most people who buy it fall into two groups. One trains hard and uses glutamine around workouts, next to protein or branched-chain amino acids. The other takes it in the morning on an empty stomach with digestion in mind. Both groups usually end up at the same serving: about 5 g a day, roughly one level teaspoon of powder.

We will not promise you a result here. The European food safety authority (EFSA) has assessed glutamine for muscle mass, for the intestinal lining and for immune function. It approved no health claim for any of them, and those assessments still sit behind the claims rules in Great Britain. They are related but not interchangeable. Glutamic acid, also known as glutamate, is a different amino acid; the body can convert glutamate into glutamine, but a label saying glutamic acid is not giving you glutamine. BCAA means the three branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine, which is a separate group again. Also watch the letter: supplements use the L-form, the shape the body works with.
