Atrantil comes from KBS Research and was developed by the American gastroenterologist Dr Kenneth Brown. A serving of two capsules holds a 550 mg blend of three plant extracts. Quebracho colorado heartwood brings tannins, horse chestnut seed is standardised to aescin, and peppermint is used as a whole-leaf extract instead of the oil. All three are polyphenols: plant compounds that stay largely intact in the stomach and reach the gut. Most people take it with meals, as part of a routine around everyday digestion.
What we will not claim: the European food safety authority (EFSA) has approved no health claims for quebracho, horse chestnut extract or peppermint leaf. Atrantil and Atrantil PRO are two different products
Both versions circulate in Europe and they are easy to confuse. Standard Atrantil is the polyphenol blend only. Atrantil PRO adds three spore-forming bacteria, Bacillus subtilis HU58, Bacillus coagulans SC-208 and Bacillus clausii SC-109, and carries a slightly smaller botanical portion per serving. If you already take a probiotic, the standard version keeps your routine simple. If you prefer both in one capsule, PRO does that job. Both use a vegetable capsule, and both contain horse chestnut, which is declared as a tree nut allergen. If a one-ingredient product suits you better, look at single peppermint extracts first.

Yes, and plenty of people do. Atrantil contains no live bacteria, so it does not overlap with a probiotic product. If you want to keep the number of capsules down, Atrantil PRO already includes spore-forming strains and covers both in one. If you prefer to control each part separately, keep them apart and choose your own strain from our probiotic supplements. Introduce one new product at a time, so you can tell what does what.
The capsule shell is vegetable based, so the product is suitable for a vegan diet. The manufacturer states the formula is free from milk, eggs, peanuts, gluten, soy and shellfish. One important exception: horse chestnut is declared as a tree nut, so the product is not suitable if you have a tree nut allergy. Always read the pack you receive, since labels are updated from time to time.
The manufacturer advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Skip it if you have a tree nut allergy, because of the horse chestnut. If you take anticoagulant medication or medication for circulation, check with your pharmacist first: aescin from horse chestnut is commonly flagged in that context. Peppermint can loosen the valve at the top of the stomach, so if reflux is your main complaint, this formula may not be the best fit. Children should not use it.
