Blood sugar is the glucose in your blood. Carbohydrates from food break down into glucose, and your body uses it as fuel. Insulin, a hormone from the pancreas, moves that glucose into your cells. What the approved claims actually allow
In the UK and EU, only a few nutrients may say anything about glucose. Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. Zinc contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism. Plant ingredients such as cinnamon, berberine and bitter melon carry no approved claim, so we describe what is in the capsule rather than promise a result. The form and the dose decide what you get

- Berberine: almost always berberine HCl. The body absorbs it poorly, and one large dose often upsets the stomach, so labels normally split it across two or three meals.
- Cinnamon: Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, a natural compound with an intake limit. Ceylon cinnamon contains far less, which is why we prefer it for daily use.
- Alpha-lipoic acid: R-ALA is the form your body makes itself. Racemic ALA is half R and half S, so gram for gram it delivers less of the active half.
- Myo-inositol: a mildly sweet powder, often combined with D-chiro-inositol in a 40:1 ratio.

It depends on the ingredient, and the reason is practical rather than mysterious. Chromium and zinc are taken with a meal, which is gentler on the stomach. Berberine is normally split across meals, because a single large dose often causes wind or loose stools. Alpha-lipoic acid is usually taken away from food. Myo-inositol powder can go in water at any point in the day. Pick a slot you will remember, since consistency matters more than perfect timing.
Give it two to three weeks of daily use before you draw a conclusion, and do not expect a sudden change. Nutrients such as chromium and zinc work in the background of normal metabolism, so what people usually report is a steadier day rather than a single moment. Keep the rest of your routine the same during the trial. If nothing changes after a month or two at a sensible dose, that ingredient is probably not the one for you.
For daily use, we prefer Ceylon. The difference is coumarin, a natural compound found in cinnamon bark. Cassia cinnamon, the cheaper and more common type, contains much more of it than Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum), and coumarin has a tolerable daily intake. That is why the cinnamon products in our range state the species on the label. Neither type carries an approved blood glucose claim in the EU, so we do not make one.
Ask your GP or pharmacist first, and keep taking your medication as prescribed. Food supplements are not a replacement for treatment and should never be used to adjust a prescription yourself. This matters most with berberine, chromium at higher doses and alpha-lipoic acid, since your prescriber may want to know about them.
