Why should you take folic acid if you want to become pregnant?
Folic acid supplementation increases the mother’s folate status. A low folate status in the mother is a risk factor for the development of spina bifida in the developing fetus. For this beneficial effect, the advice is to take an additional 400 mcg of folic acid daily for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
What is the difference between Quatrefolic® (5-MTHF) and regular folic acid?
Quatrefolic® 5-MTHF is active folate, which can be used directly by the body. Regular folic acid is a synthetic form often used in supplements. It must still be converted by the body into 5-MTHF, which does not happen efficiently in everyone.
