Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3
Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin. The sun is also the most important source of vitamin D. The body produces vitamin D itself in the skin under the influence of sunlight, making it one of the few vitamins our body can synthesize on its own. Vitamin D is also found in oily fish, meat, and eggs, and is often added to margarine and low-fat margarine. Naturally, vitamin D is found in very few plant foods.
Between October and March, the sun in the Netherlands is not strong enough to trigger vitamin D production in our bodies. Most people therefore do not produce enough vitamin D to meet their needs, especially in these months. During this period, we use up the stores of vitamin D accumulated in the body. One way to ensure you get enough vitamin D during this period is to take a vitamin D supplement.
How much Vitamin D is recommended?
For everyone up to age 70, the recommended daily amount (RDA) is 10 micrograms of vitamin D. People aged 70 and older should get 20 micrograms of vitamin D per day.
The Health Council recommends that children up to 4 years old, women from 50 years of age, men from 70 years, pregnant women, and people with a darker skin tone (Mediterranean or darker) use extra Vitamin D3 year-round as a supplement to their diet.
Maximum amount of vitamin D
The maximum upper limit for people aged 11 and older is set at 100 micrograms of vitamin D per day. This is the total from food, the body's own production, and supplements. The legal maximum amount of vitamin D in dietary supplements is therefore 75 mcg, so you stay below the maximum. Always be careful when combining supplements with overlapping ingredients to make sure you do not exceed 75 micrograms of vitamin D.
