What is the gut microbiome?

Avoid taking them with hot food or hot drinks, since heat kills live cultures. Fibre powders are more flexible: take them whenever you will remember, with a full glass of water. Consistency at the same moment each day matters more than the exact hour.

Plan for two to four weeks of daily use before you form an opinion, and four to eight weeks before you decide a product is not right for you. Your existing bacteria need time to adjust, and the changes are gradual rather than sudden. Keep a short note of your dose and how you feel, so you have something to compare. If nothing has shifted after two months, a different strain or a fibre-led approach is usually the more sensible next step.

Why do I feel more bloated in the first few days?

Many people do, and the usual practical approach is to space the two a few hours apart so they are not in the stomach at the same time, then continue for a few weeks after the course ends. We cannot promise a result, because no authorised claim covers this. What we can say is that antibiotics reduce bacterial variety, and rebuilding fibre variety in your diet afterwards is at least as useful. If you take prescription medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.

Are there people who should be careful with live bacteria supplements?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a weakened immune system, are seriously ill, or have a central venous line, speak to a doctor before starting. The same goes for young children and for anyone with a diagnosed bowel condition, since some fermentable fibres can make symptoms worse. Wheat bran in particular is often poorly tolerated in irritable bowel syndrome. Food supplements are not a replacement for a varied diet or for medical advice.
