Vitals True Superfood Organic (400 grams) contains a broad composition of vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, sprouts, greens and enzymes, all of organic origin. The formula includes, among others, spirulina, barley grass juice and wheatgrass juice, chlorella, various vegetables such as beetroot, carrot and spinach, and mushrooms such as maitake (Grifola frondosa), reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis), and shiitake (Lentinula edodes). Per scoop of 6 grams, the powder provides 23 kcal, 3.8 grams of carbohydrates, 0.5 grams of fibre and 1.4 grams of protein. The recommended daily dosage is 1 to 2 scoops (6 to 12 grams), to be mixed with fruit juice, yoghurt or water. The product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
What is spirulina?
Spirulina is a blue-green alga that naturally occurs in fresh and brackish water, especially in warm climate regions such as Central America and parts of Africa and Asia. The alga grows in dense, thread-like colonies and has been harvested and dried into powder in various places around the world for centuries. In this product, spirulina is one of the ingredients within the 'greens' group.
What is chlorella?
Chlorella is a single-celled green alga that naturally occurs in freshwater, such as lakes, ponds, and slowly flowing streams. The alga has a cell wall that is often broken open during processing so that the powder is easier to use in supplements and foods. Like spirulina, chlorella is classified as a microalga.
What is wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is the young green grass of the wheat plant (Triticum aestivum), harvested at an early growth stage before the plant forms seed. At this stage, the plant consists largely of green leaves, which are pressed into juice and then processed into powder. Wheatgrass is different from wheat grains, which are only harvested later in the growth cycle.
Why is the juice of wheatgrass and barley grass used in this product instead of the whole grass?
For this product, only the juice powder of these grasses has been chosen, instead of the whole ground grass. This way, the powder contains the components from the juice, without the indigestible fibres that are present in the whole grass. This choice matches the function of this product as a phytonutrient blend, where the fibre component is not the focus.
Why are mycelia of mushrooms used instead of fruiting bodies?
Mycelium is the underground network of fungal threads on which a mushroom grows and differs from the fruiting body, which is the above-ground, visible part of the mushroom. In this product, mycelia of maitake, reishi, cordyceps, and shiitake, grown on a substrate, are chosen. Various manufacturers choose mycelium, fruiting body, or a combination of both, depending on the desired composition of the extract.
What is bromelain?
Bromelain is an enzyme that naturally occurs in the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). It is commonly derived from the pressed juice of the stem, which is then dried into powder form.
