Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, a water-soluble vitamin found in both food and supplements. It is often used as an alternative to regular niacin since it is generally better tolerated. Niacinamide plays a role within the B vitamin complex and is found in many multivitamins and separate supplements.

Both niacin and niacinamide are forms of vitamin B3, but they act differently in the body. An important difference is that niacin can cause a so-called ‘flush’ in some people—a temporary feeling of warmth or redness of the skin. Niacinamide does not cause this effect, making it a more pleasant alternative for many people.

Vitamin B3 naturally occurs in various foods, especially animal products such as meat, fish, and poultry. Plant-based sources such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes also contain vitamin B3. In some countries, foods such as bread or breakfast cereals are also fortified with vitamin B3.
