Magnesium ascorbate is vitamin C that is bound to magnesium. It is a buffered, less acidic form of vitamin C compared to ascorbic acid. Because vitamin C is bound to magnesium, this form matches the main ingredient of the formula.
Magnesium bisglycinate is a chelate: magnesium is bound to two molecules of glycine, an amino acid. This creates a stable compound, unlike loose magnesium salts such as magnesium oxide. The 109 mg on the label is the amount of pure magnesium per 2 capsules, not the weight of the entire compound.
Magnesium is naturally found in green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes and cocoa. A supplement like this is often chosen as a complement to these foods.
Valerian is a perennial plant found naturally in Europe and parts of Asia. The best-known species is true valerian (Valeriana officinalis), of which traditionally mainly the root is used. Valerian has been used for centuries in herbal traditions. In this supplement, valerian is present as an extract and not as powdered root.
The ratio 5:1 means that 5 parts of plant material are used for 1 part of extract. This allows a concentrated form of the herb to fit into a capsule. An extract ratio indicates the concentration and is different from standardisation to a fixed content of a certain component.
