What lactoferrin is and where it comes from
Lactoferrin is a protein that binds iron. Your body makes it in tears, saliva and mucus, and it also occurs in milk. The lactoferrin in supplements is almost always taken from cow's milk whey, which is why the label names milk as an allergen. Most products are lactose-free, because lactose is removed when the protein is separated, but the milk protein itself stays. That matters if you react to dairy protein rather than to lactose. As a protein, it belongs with the other protein and amino acid supplements in our range.
Apolactoferrin, native lactoferrin and hydrolysate differ
One lactoferrin molecule can carry two iron atoms. How much iron it already holds is what separates the forms you see on labels.
- Apolactoferrin is stripped of nearly all its iron, so most binding sites are still open.
- Native or holo lactoferrin is left as it occurs in milk, only partly loaded with iron.
- Lactoferrin hydrolysate is broken into fragments and is the least studied of the three.
Two more label details decide what you actually get. First, purity: "250 mg" can mean 250 mg of a powder that is 90 per cent lactoferrin, or 250 mg of the protein itself. Second, processing. Lactoferrin is heat sensitive, so freeze-dried and low-temperature methods are named on better labels. If a product mentions neither purity nor process, you are buying blind.

Note the difference in how these are described: iron carries approved European claims, for example for normal red blood cell formation and for reducing tiredness. Lactoferrin itself has no approved EU health claim yet, despite a growing research base. So we describe the protein and let you decide, rather than promise an outcome. What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a protein from the glycoprotein group that can bind and transport iron. The name comes from Latin: lacto for milk and ferrum for iron. It occurs naturally in human and cow's milk and in body fluids such as tears and saliva. Supplement lactoferrin is isolated from cow's milk whey and sold mainly in capsules. In the European Union it is regulated as a novel food, and EFSA concluded it is safe at the assessed use levels.
Is lactoferrin suitable for vegans or people who avoid lactose?
It is not vegan. Every lactoferrin supplement on the market is made from cow's milk, so it is at most suitable for vegetarians, and capsules with bovine gelatine shells are not even that. Check the shell: HPMC shells are plant-based. Most products are lactose-free, because lactose is removed when the protein is separated from whey. Milk protein remains, so it is unsuitable if you have a cow's milk protein allergy.
Which form of lactoferrin should I choose?
Start with how much iron the protein already carries, then check purity on the label. Apolactoferrin and native lactoferrin are both well represented; hydrolysate is the least researched option.

When and how do I take lactoferrin?
Most labels suggest one capsule a day. Some brands advise taking it before a meal with water, others with food; follow the label you bought, because dose and advice differ per product. Lactoferrin is heat sensitive, so do not stir it into hot drinks or hot food. Many users run it for a few months and then take a break of a few weeks. Store capsules cool and dry, away from direct light and humidity.
Can I combine lactoferrin with iron or with probiotics?
Both combinations are common. If you also take an iron supplement, several brands suggest spacing them out across the day, for example iron in the morning and lactoferrin later, simply to keep the two intakes separate. Combining with live bacteria cultures is also popular among people focused on gut routines. We describe these as practical habits, not as a proven double effect, because no combined claim is approved in the EU.
How much iron do adults in the UK need each day?
Lactoferrin is often bought in an iron context, so the official reference figures are useful background. The NHS reference nutrient intakes for adults are:

Who should be careful with lactoferrin supplements?
Anyone with a cow's milk protein allergy should avoid it, since the raw material is milk. Products are labelled for adults; brands advise checking with a doctor before giving lactoferrin to children or teenagers. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication or have a condition affecting iron storage, ask your GP or pharmacist first. Keep supplements out of reach of children. Food supplements do not replace a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Why do lactoferrin supplements cost more than most protein products?
Yield explains most of it. Lactoferrin makes up only a small fraction of the protein in cow's milk, so large volumes of whey are processed for a modest amount of finished powder. The protein is also heat sensitive, which rules out cheap high-temperature drying and pushes producers towards gentler, slower methods. On top of that, purity grades differ: a 90 per cent grade costs more than a diluted powder. That is why comparing price per capsule tells you little without the purity figure.
