What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of more than a hundred cannabinoids in the hemp plant. It is not intoxicating, so it does not make you high. In shops it is sold as a food supplement in oils, capsules, gummies and balms. CBD has no approved health claims in Europe, which is why we describe the extract type, the strength and the purity instead of promising effects.

What is the difference between full spectrum, broad spectrum and CBD isolate?

The difference is how much of the hemp plant stays in the extract. That also decides the taste and whether any THC is present.

Question 3

Which form should I choose: oil drops, capsules, gummies or a balm?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how exactly you want to measure and whether the hemp taste bothers you. Oils give you the finest control, while chewable gummies and capsules give a fixed amount per serving.

How much CBD is in one drop of oil?

Accepted Answer

Divide the milligrams in the bottle by the millilitres, then by about 20 drops per millilitre. A 10 ml bottle with 500 mg gives 50 mg per millilitre, so roughly 2.5 mg per drop. The same 500 mg in a 30 ml bottle gives under 1 mg per drop. Labels that only show a bottle total leave you guessing, so we prefer products that state milligrams per drop or per serving.

How much CBD per day does UK guidance mention?

The Food Standards Agency gives precautionary advice for CBD in food supplements, and it also names groups for whom CBD is not advised.

Does the carrier oil matter?

Accepted Answer

It changes the taste and the feel more than anything else. Hemp seed oil tastes green and nutty and suits people who want the whole product to come from hemp. MCT oil, usually from coconut, is thinner and almost tasteless, which makes higher strengths easier to hold under the tongue. Olive oil sits in between. All three are plant based, so all are suitable if you eat vegan.

What should I check on the label and the lab report?

Look for four things. First, the CBD content per millilitre or per serving, not only per bottle. Second, a batch number on the bottle that matches the batch on the lab report. Third, the THC line on that report. Fourth, the carrier oil and the best before date. A report from a year ago for a different batch tells you nothing about the bottle in your hand.

Can I take CBD with medication or other supplements?

Accepted Answer

If you take medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist first. UK guidance from the Food Standards Agency advises against CBD while you are on medication, and that advice is worth following. Alongside ordinary supplements such as vitamins or minerals there is no special rule, though it is sensible to keep to the 10 mg per day advice for healthy adults and to introduce one new product at a time.

Why do CBD prices differ so much between products?

Accepted Answer

Compare the price per 10 mg of CBD and most of the difference becomes visible. Isolate is cheaper to produce than a full spectrum extract that keeps the terpenes intact. Batch-by-batch third-party testing adds cost, as does a small bottle size: a 10 ml bottle costs nearly as much to make and ship as a 30 ml one. A low sticker price on a weak bottle is often the dearest option per milligram.
