Choosing a face serum by skin concern
A serum is the treatment step in a routine. It carries a higher share of active ingredients in a light base that sinks in fast, so it goes on after cleansing and before your moisturiser. A serum treats, a cream seals. That is the practical difference between them, and it is why a serum belongs early in your facial skincare routine instead of replacing your moisturiser.
The actives, and the concern each one answers
Most serums are built around one lead ingredient. Pick that ingredient by your main concern, not by the label design.
- Vitamin C: an antioxidant, used in the morning for a brighter, more even looking tone. It breaks down in light and air, so opaque or airtight packaging is a genuine buying criterion.
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3): suits oily and congested skin. Four to ten percent is the usual range. Higher is not better and often stings.
- Hyaluronic acid: holds water in the upper skin layers. Apply it to damp skin and seal it with a cream, otherwise it can feel tight in dry indoor air. See our hyaluronic acid selection.
- Retinol and retinal: vitamin A forms for fine lines and rough texture. Evening only, two nights a week to start.
- Peptides and ceramides: the calmer route when acids and retinoids leave your skin reactive.
Texture decides whether layering works
Two serums can hold the same active and behave differently. Watery gels absorb in seconds. Silicone or oil rich formulas sit on top and can pill, those little rolls of product under your fingers. Work from thin to thick, give each layer half a minute, and keep nourishing facial oils for the very end, because oil blocks a water based serum applied over it.

What a serum can and cannot do
Be realistic about timing. A hydrating serum makes skin look plumper the same day. Vitamin C usually needs two to four weeks of daily use before tone looks more even, and retinol or retinal often need eight to twelve weeks. Stopping after ten days tells you nothing.
A serum also has a ceiling. Daily sunscreen protects the result you are paying for, especially with vitamin A forms, which make skin more sensitive to sunlight. If your skin is easily irritated, one serum plus a moisturiser will take you further than four bottles used inconsistently. Start with the single concern that bothers you most, keep it up for six weeks, then decide whether to add anything.

Wait roughly thirty to sixty seconds between layers, until your skin feels dry rather than tacky. Oil based serums and facial oils are the exception: they go last, because oil seals rather than sinks in.

Yes, if you split them sensibly. The simplest approach is one in the morning and one at night: vitamin C after cleansing in the morning, retinol or retinal in the evening. If you want both in one sitting, apply the thinner one first, let it settle, then the richer one. Avoid stacking a retinoid with a strong acid exfoliant on the same night. That combination is the usual cause of stinging and flaking.
It depends on the active. Hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid or glycerin make skin look plumper within a day, because they simply hold water. Vitamin C generally needs two to four weeks of daily use before tone looks more even. Retinol and retinal work on texture and fine lines, and eight to twelve weeks is a fair expectation. Consistency matters more than concentration, so pick a strength you can use without breaks.
You can, with sunscreen. Vitamin A forms make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so daily SPF is not optional while you use them, and it also protects the smoother texture you are working towards. Start with two evenings a week, use a pea sized amount for the whole face, and build up only once your skin stays calm. Usually too much product, or the wrong order. Pilling, when product rolls into small flakes, happens when a formula with silicones or film formers is layered over something that has not absorbed, or when you rub instead of pressing. Use two or three drops, press it in with your palms, and wait until skin is dry to the touch. Stickiness is typical of high hyaluronic acid formulas. Applying them to damp skin and sealing with a cream fixes most of it.
Start with barrier support rather than strong actives: ceramides, panthenol, centella, or a peptide serum. These aim at comfort rather than fast change, which is exactly what reactive skin needs first. Fragrance free helps, since fragrance is a common trigger. Patch test on the jawline for a few days before using anything on your whole face. If you want vitamin C, look at gentler derivatives instead of high strength L-ascorbic acid, and use it every other morning at first.
