Choosing vitamins for toddlers aged one to three
After the first birthday a toddler eats small portions and changes their mind often. Growth carries on regardless. That is why the UK keeps one supplement on the list at this age: vitamin D. Between October and March the sunlight here is too weak for the skin to make enough, and food supplies very little. The official advice is 10 micrograms (400 IU) a day for children aged one to four, all year round. Everything else depends on how your child eats, which is why you will also find combined drops with vitamins A, C and D in this part of our supplements by life stage.
Form matters more than the front of the label
With a toddler, the form decides whether a supplement gets taken at all. Drops give you the most control: you count the dose and stir it into yoghurt or porridge. An oral spray helps when a spoon turns into a battle. Gummies taste like a treat, but check two things: whether the label allows your child's age, and how much sugar or sweetener sits in one piece. Chewable tablets are usually meant for children of three and up, because of the risk of choking. Powders suit families who already mix a bottle or a smoothie.

We leave out products that squeeze fifteen ingredients into one gummy at token amounts, because a little of everything helps nobody. What a supplement can and cannot do
A supplement fills a gap in the diet; it does not replace meals. Vitamin D contributes to the normal growth and development of bone in children, and vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Neither will end a fussy eating phase, which is common at this age and usually passes on its own.
Two practical points parents raise. First, add up the total: if you give a multivitamin and a separate vitamin D drop, count what is in both, not just one. Second, formula-fed babies who still drink more than 500 ml a day already get added vitamins, which matters in the months after your child turns one and starts drinking less. For vitamin D, yes. Diet alone rarely covers 10 micrograms a day, because only a few foods contain much of it, and UK sunlight cannot fill the gap from October to March. Vitamins A and C are easier to get from food, so a varied eater may need less support there. If you are unsure, look at what your child actually eats over a week rather than a single day, and ask your health visitor.
They solve one problem and create another. A gummy is taken willingly, which matters if drops turn into a daily argument. But most gummies are labelled from three years because of the chewing and choking risk, and they usually contain sugar or sweeteners that stay on the teeth. If you choose gummies, give them with a meal rather than at bedtime, brush afterwards, and check the dose per piece instead of per pack.
Change the carrier, not the dose. Most drops mix into cold or lukewarm food: yoghurt, apple puree, porridge. Avoid hot food and do not stir them into a full beaker, because half of it stays behind. A spray inside the cheek is often accepted faster than a spoon. Keep the timing the same each day, for example after breakfast, so it becomes routine. Give it two to three weeks before you decide it is not working.
You can, but count the total first. Many children's multivitamins already contain the full 10 micrograms of vitamin D, so adding a second product doubles it. The same applies to vitamin A, which children's drops normally contain and which has an upper limit for young children. Our rule of thumb: one product that covers the basics, and only add a second if the first genuinely lacks what you need.
Food comes first here. Iron contributes to normal cognitive development in children, and meat, lentils, beans and fortified cereals are the everyday sources. We do not recommend giving iron on your own initiative: too much is not harmless, and low iron should be confirmed by your GP before you supplement. Our iron supplements are mainly aimed at adults. For omega-3, oily fish once or twice a week is the simplest route at this age.
