What is actually inside a bottled protein drink
A protein drink is a shake that is already mixed for you, usually 250 ml to 500 ml, with roughly 20 g to 30 g of protein per bottle. The protein comes from milk (whey, casein or a blend) or from plants such as pea and soya. You open it and drink it, nothing to measure or shake.
Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. That claim applies to your total protein over the day, not to one bottle. A drink simply makes that daily total easier to reach on days when meals fall short, and it costs more per gram of protein than a tub of protein powder.
Milky shakes, clear drinks and plant-based bottles
The category splits into three types that feel completely different to drink:
- Milky shakes: thick and dessert-like, mostly whey and milk protein. Filling, and they work well in place of a snack.
- Clear protein drinks: made with whey isolate or hydrolysate (protein filtered until almost no milk sugar or fat is left), so they look and taste like juice. Lighter on the stomach and lower in calories.
- Plant-based drinks: usually pea or soya protein, slightly grainier in texture, made for people who avoid dairy.
Lactose is the practical dividing line. Clear drinks based on isolate contain very little of it, while creamy milk-protein shakes contain more. If a shake has ever left you bloated, that is the first thing to check on the label, and a firmer high-protein bar may suit you better.
How we choose the protein drinks we stock
We look at three things: the protein source, the amount per bottle, and the sugar sitting next to it. We prefer drinks with at least 20 g of protein and low added sugar, because a bottle with 8 g of protein and 20 g of sugar is a milkshake with a claim on the front. For clear drinks we want whey isolate, for dairy-free we want pea or soya at a dose that matches the whey versions, not half of it. Who these drinks suit, and where they do not help
They suit people who train and struggle to eat enough afterwards, people who skip breakfast, shift workers, and anyone whose appetite drops when the day gets busy. Older adults who eat small meals often find a bottle easier than another plate of food.
They are less useful if your meals already cover your protein. UK adults on average eat well above the national reference intake, so an extra bottle then adds calories rather than anything else. A drink is also not a meal unless it is a complete formula with carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Whenever it fits the gap in your day. After training is the most common moment, because appetite is often low and a liquid goes down easily. But total protein across the day matters more than the exact hour, so a bottle at breakfast or as an afternoon snack does the same job. If you train early and eat late, use it to break up a long stretch without protein. Spreading intake over the day is more useful than saving it all for dinner.
Choose on texture and on how your stomach reacts, not on the marketing. All three types deliver protein.

If shakes usually feel heavy, start with a clear drink.
Not better, just different. Powder is cheaper per gram of protein and lets you control the liquid, the dose and the flavour. A ready-to-drink bottle costs more and you pay for the water and the packaging, but it needs no shaker, no fridge until opened and no clean-up. Many people use both: powder at home, bottles for the gym bag and the commute. If cost per serving is your main concern, powder wins clearly.
Yes, but read the label. Creamy milk-protein shakes contain the most lactose. Clear drinks made with whey isolate contain very little, because the filtering removes most of the milk sugar, and many people who react to milk tolerate them. Whey is still a dairy product, so it is not suitable if you avoid animal ingredients. For most healthy adults a daily bottle is fine, as long as it is counted as part of your food, not on top of everything else. Protein drinks add calories, and milkshake-style versions can add a fair amount of sugar too. Check the sugar figure against the protein figure: at least twice as much protein as sugar is a reasonable filter. If you have a kidney condition or are pregnant, ask your GP or a dietitian first.
They matter for taste and comfort more than anything else. Most low-sugar bottles use sucralose or acesulfame K, which some people find sharply sweet, and some contain sugar alcohols that can feel heavy in the gut if you drink several. Thickeners and emulsifiers give milky shakes their body; clear drinks need almost none, which is part of why they feel lighter. If a shake has disagreed with you before, compare ingredient lists rather than switching brand blindly.
