Batch-tested supplements for athletes in a testing pool
NZVT stands for Nederlands Zekerheidssysteem Voedingssupplementen Topsport, the Dutch assurance system for supplements in elite sport. The Dutch Doping Authority set it up with the national Olympic committee, the health ministry and the supplement industry. The principle is simple. An accredited laboratory tests a specific production batch for doping substances. Only batches that pass are listed publicly.
The mark belongs to a batch, not to a brand or a product name. Every new production run has to be tested again. So the code printed on your tub matters more than the logo on the front. You can check that code on the list of the Dutch Doping Authority, or in the Dopingwaaier app, before you open the pack.
What the testing covers, and what it does not
The analysis screens for anabolic steroids and stimulants from the WADA prohibited list, at very low thresholds. The system also looks at how a producer buys raw materials and how it keeps production lines apart, so traces cannot travel from one product to another. What it does not do is confirm that a product works, or that the amount printed on the label is really inside. Certification answers one question: are prohibited substances absent. Dose and form still need judging, which is what we do across our range for athletes.
Contamination is not a theoretical worry. In the pilot study that led to NZVT, 69 supplements were analysed and fifteen contained doping substances that were not on the label, mostly traces of stimulants. The amounts were far too small to affect health, but large enough to cause a positive test. That gap between a health problem and a sporting problem is the reason batch testing exists.

Most demand sits in a handful of categories. Powders such as creatine monohydrate and protein come first, followed by carbohydrate drinks and basic vitamins and minerals.
For long or hot sessions, electrolyte mixes are the second most requested group. Certified versions often cost more than the same formula without the mark, because each batch has to be paid for and analysed. If you are never tested, that surcharge buys reassurance rather than performance. If you are in a testing pool, it buys the evidence you need.
NZVT gives the highest assurance currently available, not an absolute guarantee. Under anti-doping rules you stay responsible for what is in your body. Keep the packaging, write down the batch code and note what you took and when. That record is worth as much as the certificate.
How we choose the products in this collection
We start with the certification, then apply our usual three checks: the form, the dose and whether a combination makes sense. A creatine has to be plain monohydrate, because that is the best studied form. An electrolyte mix has to state milligrams of sodium, potassium and magnesium per serving, not hide them in a blend. Testing costs money per batch, so many good brands simply do not certify every line. The risk is that you cannot prove anything if you are tested. If you compete under doping control, choose a certified batch. If you do not compete, the mark is reassurance rather than a requirement.
Find the batch or lot code, usually printed or stamped near the best-before date on the base or the seal. Then look that code up on the list of the Dutch Doping Authority or in the Dopingwaaier app. Certification does not carry over to the next production run, so a product you used last season may need checking again. Keep the empty packaging until the season ends, so the code stays available if questions come up.

If your governing body names a programme, follow that name.
Risk rises with complexity and with anything sold for energy, muscle gain or weight loss. Multi-ingredient pre-workout blends, herbal extracts and products with proprietary blends are harder to verify than a single-ingredient powder. Simple products such as plain creatine monohydrate, whey protein or a vitamin D tablet have fewer ingredients and fewer chances for a stray trace. Certified batches matter most in exactly those higher-risk categories.
No. The analysis checks for prohibited substances, not for effectiveness or label accuracy. Effect depends on the ingredient and the daily amount. Creatine is a clear example: an approved European claim covers creatine for physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise, at a daily intake of 3 grams. A certified tub with a lower dose than that will not deliver on that claim. So read the certificate and the serving size separately.
Keep the product name, the brand, the batch code, the purchase date and the dates you used it. Photograph the label and the code, and store the empty container until the competitive season is over. If you order for a team, record which batch went to which athlete. This paperwork does not prevent a positive test, but it lets you show exactly what you took and from which analysed batch, which is the part athletes most often cannot reconstruct afterwards.
