Sleep supplements are not sedatives. They deliver nutrients and plant extracts that support your body while it winds down, which is why they sit in our MIND + SLEEP pillar rather than in the medicine cabinet. That difference matters when you compare labels. It explains why one ingredient helps a colleague and does nothing for you. Sleep is also an area where more is rarely better: a higher dose does not switch you off faster.
Melatonin is a prescription medicine in the UK
In the UK, melatonin is classed as a prescription-only medicine, not a food supplement. Shops cannot legally sell it, and parcels ordered from abroad can be stopped at customs. So you will not find melatonin here. If you have slept badly for weeks, or you snore heavily and still wake up exhausted, speak to your GP first. That is a different problem from an occasional restless night.

Herbal options such as valerian root extracts are traditional choices with no EU-approved claim, so judge them on your own experience.
Most labels suggest thirty to sixty minutes before bed. Magnesium and amino acids can be taken with a small snack if a capsule on an empty stomach feels heavy. Adaptogens such as ashwagandha are usually taken daily, morning or evening, because they build up. Be patient: expect to need two to three weeks of consistent use before you can judge the effect. The differences are practical rather than dramatic. Capsules are precise and travel well. Read the ingredients panel, not the front of the pack. A label may say 1,500 mg magnesium bisglycinate, which is the weight of the whole compound. The useful number is the elemental magnesium underneath it, often around 200 mg. Oxide carries a high percentage of elemental magnesium but is absorbed poorly, while bisglycinate and citrate carry less per gram and are absorbed better.
