Forms differ less than the labels suggest
Chromium picolinate is chromium bound to picolinic acid. It is the form used in most studies and in most tablets and capsules sold in the UK. Chromium chloride is an inorganic salt: cheaper, and less well absorbed. Chromium-enriched yeast carries chromium inside a yeast protein, which some people prefer, although it is not an option if you react to yeast. Absorption is low from every form, roughly 0.4 to 2.5 percent of what you swallow, so the dose on the label tells you more than the form does. Single-mineral products usually give 40 to 200 mcg. Strengths of 500 or 1,000 mcg exist for research-style use and are not a starting point. For basic daily cover, a multivitamin with chromium is often enough.
