Wild yam root, diosgenin and the forms we stock
Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a climbing plant from North and Central America. The root is the part used, and it reaches you either as dried whole root or as an extract. Extracts are usually standardised for diosgenin, a plant compound that producers use as a yardstick for strength. Labels on the UK market commonly state between 6% and 20% diosgenin.
One thing deserves clearing up straight away, because many product pages skip it. From the 1940s, chemists used diosgenin as the starting material to build progesterone in the laboratory. The human body cannot repeat that reaction. Wild yam therefore supplies no progesterone and no oestrogen, and it is not a plant version of hormone therapy. We would rather you read that here than work it out after you have paid.
The forms differ more than the price suggests
Wild yam sits among the classic roots in our range of herbs and plants, and here the form decides what you can actually compare.
- Whole root capsules and tablets: the milled dried root, often 350 mg to 500 mg per capsule. Closest to traditional use.
- Standardised extracts: fewer milligrams, but a stated diosgenin percentage, so one batch is comparable to the next.
- Tinctures and drops: liquid, easy to adjust drop by drop and easy to take if capsules are a struggle.
- Creams: applied to the skin. Widely sold, but the evidence for hormonal effects is weak, which is worth knowing before you spend.
The diosgenin content of the raw root varies with species, harvest time and drying. Two products showing the same milligram number can therefore differ in practice. That is why a stated percentage, or at least a clear extract ratio such as 6:1, tells you more than a big number on the front of the bottle.

Who tends to buy wild yam, and who should skip it
Most buyers are adults who want a traditional herb alongside the basics of sleep, food and movement, rather than instead of them. Interest is highest among women following their cycle and the years around Menopause, which is also where the marketing tends to get loudest.
Be realistic about time and evidence. Herbs are normally taken consistently for two to three weeks before anyone judges them, and European food law has approved no health claims for wild yam, so we describe tradition and composition and leave the decision with you. Wild yam is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and not for children or teenagers. Diosgenin from wild yam was the industrial starting material for laboratory-made progesterone, but that conversion needs chemical steps the human body does not perform. So a wild yam capsule or cream contains no hormones and is not a natural substitute for hormone therapy. If a product suggests otherwise, that is marketing rather than science, and it is a claim we do not allow on our pages.

For a first purchase, a standardised extract in capsules is the easiest to judge and to repeat.
There is no official reference intake for wild yam, so the label is your guide. Whole root products commonly sit around 350 mg to 1000 mg a day, split into one or two servings. Standardised extracts use far fewer milligrams because the diosgenin is concentrated. Take it with a meal and plenty of water, which reduces the chance of mild stomach discomfort. Timing during the day makes little difference; taking it consistently does.
Give it two to three weeks of consistent daily use before you form an opinion, and keep the same product and dose during that period. Switching brands halfway makes it impossible to tell what did what. Herbal roots are not fast-acting, and the human research on wild yam is limited and mixed, so treat it as an experiment with a clear end date rather than a guaranteed result. If nothing changes, stopping is a sensible decision.

That combination of unknowns is a good reason for a professional to look at your specific medication rather than for us to reassure you. It states how much of the extract weight is diosgenin, so 500 mg of a 20% extract supplies 100 mg diosgenin. It is a potency marker, not a promise of effect. It matters because the raw root varies by species, harvest and drying, so unstandardised powder can differ noticeably between batches. Also check the extract ratio, for example 6:1, and whether the milligrams shown are extract or dried root equivalent. Those two numbers are not interchangeable.
