Choosing valerian root: forms, extract strengths and timing
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. Only the root and the rhizome, the underground stem, end up in supplements. The root is dried and then turned into powder, a concentrated extract or a liquid. Its smell is strong and earthy, which is one reason most buyers pick capsules over tea. The compounds studied most are valerenic acid and the iridoids, sometimes called valepotriates. Researchers have not pinned down which compound does what, or whether several act together. That open question is not just academic. It explains why valerian labels differ so widely, and why the number on the front of the bottle can mislead you.
Extract strength is the number that actually matters
Two products can both say valerian and contain very different amounts of plant. A 10:1 extract means ten parts of dried root are concentrated into one part of extract. So 60 mg of a 10:1 extract is roughly equal to 600 mg of root. Plain root powder needs a far higher weight per capsule to reach the same level.
- Root powder: the whole dried root, ground and encapsulated.
- Standardised extract: concentrated, and measured against a marker such as 0.8% valerenic acid.
- Tincture or drops: root in alcohol or glycerine, dosed by the drop.
- Tea: cut root, strongest in taste and smell, least precise in dose.
Standardised means every batch is tested so it holds the same amount of the marker compound. Without a marker on the label, you cannot fairly compare one bottle with another.

Here is the honest part. The European food safety authority (EFSA) has approved no health claim for valerian, so we will not tell you it improves your sleep.
