What to look for in an oregano oil supplement
Oregano is a Mediterranean herb from the mint family, Origanum vulgare. The subspecies used for supplements in Europe is usually hirtum, often called wild or Greek oregano. Its essential oil is far more concentrated than the dried leaf in your spice rack. The two compounds people look for are carvacrol and thymol. Plants split into two natural types: carvacrol-rich and thymol-rich. That is why one bottle smells and tastes sharper than another, even with the same plant name on the label.
The carvacrol percentage only means something with the dilution
Labels advertise figures like 60%, 70% or above 80% carvacrol. That number describes the oil, not the capsule. A softgel with a 1:10 dilution in olive oil delivers much less than a concentrated 1:3 blend, even at the same percentage. So always read two things together: the carvacrol level and how much oregano oil is actually in one serving. Very high percentages can also be reached by mixing natural oil with synthetic carvacrol, which is why origin and production method belong on the label. Oregano is never taken neat: it is always diluted in a food-grade oil, usually olive oil.
Forms differ in taste and in where they release

Never take drops neat. Stir them into a spoon of olive or coconut oil, or into a full glass of water, and drink it with a meal. Fat softens the sharpness and helps absorption, since the compounds in oregano oil dissolve in fat rather than water. Follow with more water. If the taste still bothers you, a coated capsule gives the same intake with no flavour at all.

It is the share of carvacrol in the oregano oil itself, not in the whole capsule. A capsule with 25 mg of oil at 70% carvacrol delivers far less than one with 75 mg of oil at the same percentage. Very high figures can also come from blending natural oil with synthetic carvacrol. Look for the plant type, the origin, the oil amount per serving and the percentage together. One number on its own is not comparable.
Many people prefer to space them out during the day rather than swallow both at once, simply because oregano oil is a strong botanical. A common approach is oregano with a meal and the cultures at another moment, or alternating a few weeks of oregano with a period of cultures. There is no official rule on timing. If you are unsure, keep it simple: one new product at a time, so you notice how you respond.
Oregano oil is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is not intended for children. Skip it if you are allergic to plants in the mint family, such as basil, thyme, sage or marjoram. If you take prescription medication, especially blood thinners or medication for blood sugar, ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting. Some people get mild stomach upset or reflux; taking the product with food, or choosing a coated capsule, usually helps.
