Ginsenosides and extract ratios decide what you actually get
Ginseng is the dried root of the Panax plant, and the botanical name matters more than the wording on the front of the pack. Panax ginseng is Korean or Asian ginseng, the type most UK shoppers have in mind. Panax quinquefolius is American ginseng, traditionally seen as the gentler of the two. Not everything called ginseng is a Panax root
Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is a different plant with different compounds, and it contains no ginsenosides. Indian ginseng is another name for ashwagandha, which people use for calm rather than for a lift. So if a label only says ginseng complex, check which species are inside. Doses only make sense when you compare within one species.
Red or white is a processing choice, not a strength rating
White ginseng is peeled and sun-dried. Red ginseng is steamed first and then dried, which shifts the mix of ginsenosides, the plant compounds ginseng is known for. Red is the traditional Korean form and usually costs more, partly because the older roots used for it are scarcer. Neither colour is automatically stronger. The standardised ginsenoside figure tells you far more than the colour does.
Reading the numbers on the front of the pack
A pack shouting 4,000 mg almost always means root equivalent, not the amount inside the tablet. A 10:1 extract means ten parts root produced one part extract, so 120 mg of a 10:1 extract equals 1,200 mg of root. Standardised to 20% ginsenosides, that same 120 mg gives 24 mg of ginsenosides. Two packs with wildly different headline numbers can land in the same place. Compare the ginsenoside milligrams first, then the price per day.

Who it suits, and what to expect
Ginseng is for adults. Most people take it in the morning, because it can feel stimulating and may keep you awake if taken late. European guidance for traditional ginseng preparations sets a duration of up to three months of continuous use, which is why many people run a course rather than take it year-round. Give it two to three weeks of consistent use before you decide whether it does anything for you.
We also want to be straight about the rules. No health claim for ginseng has been authorised in the EU, so we stick to traditional use, forms and dosing, and leave the promises out. Skip ginseng during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Speak to your GP first if you take medicines that affect blood clotting or blood sugar, and stop a week before planned surgery.
Combinations that make sense
In the UK, ginseng often appears alongside ginkgo, and with B vitamins or zinc in energy formulas. A combination earns its place when every dose in it is honest. It is a problem when the ginseng is a token amount added to justify the word on the label, so check the ginsenoside figure in blends too. Ginseng is the root of the Panax plant, grown mainly in Korea, north-east China and North America. The compounds it is known for are called ginsenosides. Roots are usually lifted at four to six years old, because ginsenoside content builds slowly. In Europe, ginseng root preparations have a recognised traditional use for symptoms of tiredness and weakness in adults. That is a traditional use status, not an approved health claim, which is why we describe it in those terms.
Only the first two are true ginseng. The other two are separate plants that borrowed the name, so their doses and effects are not comparable.

Amounts differ by preparation, not by brand marketing. The European Medicines Agency monograph for ginseng root lists these adult ranges for traditional use.

Ginseng has a mildly stimulating character, and taken in the afternoon or evening it can make falling asleep harder for some people. Food also settles it for anyone with a sensitive stomach. If you take two tablets a day, morning and early afternoon works better than a single late dose. Many shoppers use it as part of a wider routine for everyday energy support.
Plan on two to three weeks of daily use before you judge it. Some people report a difference within a few days, but that is not the norm and is easy to confuse with a good night's sleep or a lighter week. Take the same product at the same time each day, otherwise you have nothing to compare. If nothing has changed after a month at the dose on the pack, ginseng may simply not be your ingredient.
European guidance for traditional ginseng preparations sets a duration of use of up to three months. Many long-term users go further and cycle it, for example a few weeks on and a few weeks off, which is a traditional habit rather than a rule. Cycling has one practical advantage: after a break you notice more clearly whether the product does anything for you. If your reason for taking it persists beyond a few weeks, speak to a pharmacist or GP.

Stop taking ginseng about a week before planned surgery. If you are sensitive to stimulation, start with the lowest dose on the pack, or consider a calmer adaptogen instead.
Work out the milligrams of ginsenosides per day, not the headline number. Multiply the extract weight by the standardised percentage. A 120 mg 10:1 extract standardised to 20% gives 24 mg of ginsenosides. A 62.5 mg 50:1 extract standardised to 30% gives about 19 mg, even though its pack may advertise 3,125 mg of root equivalent. Then divide the price per pack by the number of days it lasts. If a product states no percentage at all, you cannot make this comparison, which is exactly why we prefer standardised extracts.
