Choosing cordyceps: species, extracts and what the label really says
Cordyceps is a group of fungi. The best known species, Cordyceps sinensis, grows in the wild on caterpillars high on the Tibetan plateau. Wild material is rare and costs more per gram than gold, so it is almost never what ends up in a supplement.
What you buy here is cultivated. Two types dominate our range of herbs and fungi: Cordyceps militaris, a bright orange fungus grown on a plant-based substrate, and CS-4, a strain isolated from wild sinensis and grown in a fermentation tank. Both are vegan. Neither involves insects.
The form on the label changes what you actually swallow
- Fruiting body extract: made from the mushroom itself. Usually the richest in beta-glucans, the fungal fibres used as a quality marker.
- Mycelium grown on grain: the root-like network dried together with the rice or oats it grew on. Cheaper, but part of every capsule is grain starch.
- Fermented CS-4: grown in liquid, no grain carrier. This is the material behind much of the older cordyceps research.
- Powder and tinctures: powder mixes into coffee or a smoothie, drops let you build the amount up slowly.
One label detail is worth learning. A beta-glucan percentage tells you more than a polysaccharide percentage, because a polysaccharide figure can quietly include starch from the growing grain. Beta-glucans cannot come from rice. Dual extract means hot water plus alcohol: water draws out the beta-glucans, alcohol draws out cordycepin and other alcohol-soluble compounds.
What to expect, without the promises
The European food safety authority (EFSA) has approved no health claim for cordyceps. So we will not tell you what it does for you. We can tell you how people use it: often in the morning or 30 to 60 minutes before training, usually one to three grams of extract a day, judged after two to three weeks of consistent use. That patience is the point, and it is also how you find out whether cordyceps earns a place in your routine or not. Beta-glucans come from the fungus itself, so a stated beta-glucan level is a real quality signal. A broad polysaccharide figure can include starch from the growing grain, which inflates the number without adding fungal content. Cordycepin is a separate marker, mostly extracted with alcohol.
