Boswellia serrata extract: forms, standardisation and daily use
Boswellia is the resin of the Boswellia serrata tree, which grows in India, the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Africa. The dried resin is better known as Indian frankincense, or salai. Ayurvedic practice has used it for centuries. Supplements use an extract of that resin, measured by its content of boswellic acids. It is one of the more specific choices among our herbal extracts.
The percentage on the label says more than the milligrams
Two products can both say 500 mg boswellia and still be very different. The standardisation tells you more. Most extracts sold in the UK state 65% boswellic acids, some go higher, to 75% or 85%. A smaller group is standardised for AKBA, one specific boswellic acid, and those capsules carry a much lower milligram amount on purpose. Before you compare prices, compare three things:
- Extract or resin: a 5:1 or 10:1 extract, or plain gum resin powder
- Boswellic acids: the percentage, and whether it is stated at all
- AKBA: named separately when the product is built around it
Gum resin powder is the traditional form and usually the cheapest. Its content varies from batch to batch, which is exactly what a standardised extract removes.
Extraction and purity are part of the choice
Resin extracts are made with solvents. Gentler methods leave fewer residues, and some brands work with certified organic resin or publish batch tests for heavy metals. Boswellia resin is tapped from the bark by hand, so quality shifts with region and season. That is why we look at what a brand can actually show. Follow the dose on the pack, since products differ far more than the front label suggests. Take it with a meal. Boswellic acids are fat-soluble, and food also reduces the mild nausea or loose stools some people report on an empty stomach. Because they measure different things. A pack saying 2000 mg often means 400 mg of a 5:1 extract, so 400 mg of extract equals 2000 mg of dried resin. A 10:1 extract halves that number again. Then the percentage decides the rest: 400 mg at 65% boswellic acids gives roughly 260 mg of boswellic acids. Compare that last figure, not the headline number, and check whether the percentage is stated at all.
AKBA is a single boswellic acid and is often described as the most studied one. Extracts enriched for AKBA are dosed much lower, sometimes one small capsule a day, which suits people who dislike large capsules. Standard extracts contain only a small share of AKBA, so they need higher totals. Neither route is proven better for you personally, so we stock both and state on each product what is standardised and to what level.
