Lutein and zeaxanthin: forms, labels and honest expectations
Lutein is a carotenoid: a yellow plant pigment your body cannot make itself. You get it from food or from a supplement. In supplements it nearly always comes from marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta). In food it sits in kale, spinach, sweetcorn and egg yolk. On this page you will find single-ingredient capsules and combinations, alongside the rest of our antioxidants.
One honest point first. EFSA, the European food safety authority, assessed lutein and the maintenance of normal vision and found the evidence insufficient. There is no authorised health claim for lutein, so any shop promising sharper sight is going beyond what the rules allow. Three nutrients do carry an authorised vision claim: vitamin A, riboflavin and zinc each contribute to the maintenance of normal vision. That is why many eye formulas add them, and why products with riboflavin are worth a look if an approved claim matters to you.
Free lutein and lutein esters are not the same number on the label
Two raw materials dominate the shelf. Free lutein is already separated from its fatty acids, so the milligrams on the label are lutein. Lutein esters are lutein still bound to fatty acids; your gut splits them before absorption, and the ester weight is higher than the lutein weight it delivers. A well-made label says so, for example "lutein esters providing 10 mg lutein". If a product only lists milligrams of marigold extract, you cannot compare it with anything.
Fat helps, and the timeline is measured in months
Lutein is fat-soluble, so it absorbs better from a meal that contains some fat: eggs, olive oil, oily fish, nuts. A softgel already sits in an oil base, which is one reason people find them easier to place in a routine than a dry tablet. Expect a slow build. The pigment in the macula shifts gradually, and research on this looks at months of daily use, not days. Nothing about lutein works as a quick fix.

People who spend long days in front of screens often reach for it too. If you already eat spinach, kale or sweetcorn several times a week, your intake may be reasonable and a supplement adds less. Food sources include kale, spinach, sweetcorn, peas and egg yolk. Supplement lutein is almost always extracted from marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta), which is why you often see "marigold extract" on the ingredients list. Nothing specific, and that is worth knowing before you buy. EFSA assessed lutein and the maintenance of normal vision and concluded the evidence was not strong enough for an authorised claim. So a seller cannot legally promise better eyesight from lutein alone. Vitamin A, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and zinc do each carry an approved claim: they contribute to the maintenance of normal vision. Many lutein formulas include one of them for that reason.

Whichever you pick, take it with food that contains fat.
Supplements on the UK market commonly provide 10 to 20 mg per day, with high-strength versions going higher. There is no official recommended daily intake for lutein, because it is not classed as an essential nutrient. EFSA did set an acceptable daily intake for lutein used as a colour, at 1 mg per kilogram of body weight per day.

With your largest meal of the day, ideally one containing some fat. Lutein is fat-soluble, which simply means it dissolves in fat rather than water, so the fat in a meal helps it move from your gut into your blood. Taking it on an empty stomach wastes part of the dose. Morning or evening makes no difference; consistency does. Pick the meal you never skip and attach it to that.
Longer than most people expect. Lutein accumulates slowly in the macula, and studies that measure this change track people over several months of daily use. A few days or a week tells you nothing. If you try lutein, give it at least two to three months of consistent daily intake before you judge it. Also be realistic about what it is: a nutrient you are topping up, not a treatment for an eye complaint.
Often yes, if greens are a regular part of your week. Kale and spinach are the densest sources, followed by sweetcorn, peas, broccoli and egg yolk. Egg yolk is interesting because the fat in it helps absorption, so the lutein in eggs is well taken up despite the smaller amount. Cooking greens with a little oil helps too. A supplement mainly earns its place when those foods rarely appear on your plate.
Carotenoids share absorption routes, so a high-dose beta-carotene supplement taken at the same time can reduce how much lutein you take up. If you use both, space them across the day. Lutein is not known to interfere with common medicines, but if you take anticoagulants or any prescription medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first. Also check combination eye formulas for vitamin A, since retinol intake matters if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.
Lutein itself is a normal part of the diet and appears in breast milk. The caution usually lies elsewhere in the formula. Many eye products combine lutein with vitamin A as retinol, and UK guidance advises against high retinol intakes in pregnancy. Zinc and copper in AREDS-style blends are also dosed for adults, not children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or buying for a child, read the full ingredient panel and ask your GP or midwife before starting.
