Kirkland Signature is the own label of the American warehouse chain Costco. Its over-the-counter products are generic versions of national brands: the same active ingredient, simpler packaging, larger packs. That is why UK shoppers mostly know the name for one thing, the 5% minoxidil topical solution, sold in multipacks of 60 ml bottles with a dropper, and the foam version of the same strength.
Minoxidil is applied to the scalp, not swallowed. In the UK the topical form is sold over the counter and is not prescribed on the NHS for pattern hair loss, because that counts as a cosmetic matter. Liquid and foam do the same job differently
Both hold the same active ingredient at the same strength. The difference is the carrier:
- Liquid: contains propylene glycol, which helps the minoxidil pass into the scalp, but is also the usual cause of dryness, flaking and itch. The dropper gives control on longer or denser hair.
- Foam: propylene glycol free, dries faster, easier on a sensitive scalp and on short hair.

How do I apply it, and how much?
Follow the label on the pack. For the 5% liquid this is normally 1 ml twice a day, applied to a dry scalp, spread over the thinning area rather than rubbed into the hair. For the foam it is half a capful twice a day. Let it dry before styling or going to bed. More product does not speed anything up; going over the labelled amount only raises the chance of irritation. Why is my hair falling out more in the first weeks?
Early shedding is common and usually temporary. Hairs that had already reached the end of their growth cycle are pushed out as new growth starts, which can look alarming for four to six weeks. It is not a sign that the product is damaging your hair. Most people who quit at this stage never find out whether it would have worked for them. If shedding keeps getting worse after two months, ask a pharmacist or GP.
Can women use the Kirkland 5% solution?
The 5% solution is labelled for men only, so we do not recommend it to women. Products licensed for female pattern hair loss use a lower strength or a once-daily foam, and the labelling reflects that. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use topical minoxidil at all. Do I need a supplement alongside it?
Not as a replacement. Minoxidil acts on the hair growth cycle at the scalp; a supplement cannot do the same thing.
