Three nutrients do the legal work

Hair supplements often list long ingredient tables. Only a handful of those ingredients carry an approved European claim for hair: biotin, zinc and selenium each contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. Ingredients such as MSM, marine collagen, hyaluronic acid and L-cysteine appear in the capsule formula, but no hair claim has been approved for them. The UK advertising regulator confirmed that point in 2019, when it ruled against hair wording Hairburst used at the time. Capsules carry more, chewables are easier to take

The capsule formula holds far more vitamins and minerals than a gummy, simply because a gummy base can only carry so much. The chewables exist for people who dislike swallowing capsules. Two practical details shoppers often miss:

• The standard chewables use bovine gelatine, so they are not vegetarian or vegan. The vegan gummy is the alternative.
• The original capsule contains fish collagen, which matters if you avoid fish or have a fish allergy.
