Nattokinase is an enzyme that is created during fermentation of cooked soybeans with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto. This fermentation is the same process traditionally used to make the Japanese dish natto.
Nattokinase naturally occurs only in natto – a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. It has a distinctive smell and texture, and is primarily eaten in Japan.
NSK-SD® is a patented form of nattokinase developed by Japan BioScience Laboratory. It is standardized for activity (2000 FU per softgel) and produced according to strict quality standards. The product is free from vitamin K2.
FU means Fibrinolytic Units, a unit of measure that indicates enzyme activity. It shows how 'powerful' the enzyme is. The higher the FU, the more active the enzyme is under standard laboratory conditions.
Enzymes from food are often partially broken down during digestion. In supplement form, they can be standardized for activity (such as in FU), which makes it easier to estimate the amount per serving.
