NatureWise Turmeric Curcumin with BioPerine® (30, 90 or 180 softgels) contains 500 mg turmeric extract per softgel, made from the rhizome of turmeric (Curcuma longa). The extract is standardised to 95% curcuminoids, providing 475 mg curcuminoids per softgel. The formula is supplemented with 5 mg BioPerine®, a black pepper extract (Piper nigrum) standardised to 95% piperine. You only take 1 softgel per day with a meal, making this supplement easy to fit into your daily routine. Therefore, one pack lasts 30, 90 or 180 days.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), also known as curcuma or Indian saffron, is a plant from the ginger family. The plant originates from India and Southeast Asia. The rhizome is bright orange-yellow inside and is dried and ground into the well-known spice, used among other things in curry.
For this supplement, the rhizome of the turmeric plant is used. This is the underground, thickened part of the stem, similar to ginger.
Curcuminoids are the plant compounds that give turmeric its bright yellow colour. There are three curcuminoids: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Curcumin is the best known and most common.
Turmeric is the plant and the spice. Curcumin is one of the compounds found in turmeric. Ground turmeric from the kitchen usually contains about 2 to 5% curcuminoids. The extract in this supplement contains 95% curcuminoids.
A teaspoon of ground turmeric of about 3 grams contains on average around 90 mg of curcuminoids. One softgel contains 475 mg of curcuminoids. That is equivalent to roughly five teaspoons of turmeric.
Piperine is the substance that gives black pepper its pungent taste. It naturally occurs in the peppercorns of the pepper plant (Piper nigrum), a climbing plant originally from South India.
