A dermaroller is a handheld roller covered in hundreds of very fine needles. You roll it over clean skin, and the needles open tiny channels in the top layer. Two things follow from that. A product applied straight after reaches deeper than it would on its own. And the skin responds to the small stimulus by renewing itself.
Needle length decides what a roller can actually do. Rollers of 0.2 to 0.3 mm stay in the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. At that depth, rolling is mostly about getting more out of the serum you already use and about a smoother look over weeks. Needles of 0.5 mm and longer reach the deeper layer where collagen sits. In the UK that is clinic work, done by a trained practitioner, not something to try at home.
Face, body and scalp rollers are not the same tool
Head width and needle spacing change per area, so one roller rarely covers everything:
- Face: narrow heads and short needles, easier to steer around the nose, jaw and forehead.
- Body: wider heads for thighs, stomach and upper arms, where the skin is thicker and the surface larger.
- Scalp: around 0.25 mm, often used before a topical hair lotion so the liquid spreads across the scalp instead of sitting on the hair.

Rolling suits you if you already have a steady routine and want your products to work a little harder. Be realistic about the pace: with home lengths, expect a gradual change in how your skin looks after six to eight weeks of once or twice weekly use, not a difference after one session. Build it into simple care from our skin care range: cleanse first, hydrate after, and use sunscreen the next day, because freshly rolled skin is more sensitive to light.
Better absorption also means being selective. Strong acids, retinol and fragranced products are best kept for non-rolling days. Skip rolling over active breakouts, cold sores, eczema patches, moles or sunburn, and never share a roller with another person. Needles blunt with use, so plan on a fresh head every few months rather than waiting for it to feel rough.

Once a week is a sensible start. If your skin stays calm, twice a week is the usual maximum for short home needles. More is not faster: the skin needs the days in between to settle, and over-rolling mostly produces redness and irritation. Many people roll in the evening, so the skin has the night to recover and they avoid sun and make-up straight afterwards. Keep the same weekly rhythm rather than long gaps followed by intense weeks.
Roll on clean, dry skin with nothing on it, then apply your product straight after. A simple hydrating serum or your usual moisturiser is enough. Because absorption goes up, save strong acids, retinol, vitamin C in high strengths and heavily fragranced products for non-rolling days. If you also want to work on skin from the inside, supplements for hair, skin and nails are a separate step, not a replacement for care on the surface.
With 0.2 to 0.3 mm needles most people describe a prickly, scratchy feeling rather than pain. Bony areas like the forehead and jawline feel sharper than the cheeks. Mild redness for an hour or two afterwards is common and settles on its own. If you see pinpoint bleeding, the needles are too long for home use or you are pressing too hard. Let the roller glide; the weight of your hand is enough pressure.
Rinse the head under warm running water straight after use, then disinfect it with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated roller cleaner and let it air dry before it goes back in its case. Never store it damp or loose in a drawer. Needles blunt gradually, and a blunt needle drags instead of pricking, so replace the roller or head every few months with regular use. One roller, one person, always.
Scalp rollers exist and usually sit around 0.25 mm. The practical reason people use them is spreading: rolling before a topical lotion helps the liquid reach the scalp rather than coating the hair. Use gentle pressure, work in sections, and give the scalp several days between sessions. Be honest with yourself about the timeline, since hair changes are measured in months. Avoid rolling over irritated, flaky or broken skin on the scalp.
Leave rolling alone if you have active acne, cold sores, eczema or psoriasis in the area, warts, moles, keloid scarring, sunburn or any open skin. The same goes if you take blood-thinning medication or have a condition that affects clotting or wound healing. Do not roll over areas treated with injectables in the past two weeks. If you are pregnant, unsure about your skin, or want to work on scarring or deeper lines, ask a GP or a qualified practitioner first.
