Chlorogenic acid, caffeine and how to read a green coffee label
Unroasted beans, and why that matters
Green coffee beans are ordinary coffee beans before roasting. Roasting creates the familiar colour and aroma, but it also breaks down a large part of the chlorogenic acids in the bean. Chlorogenic acids are the plant compounds green coffee is bought for. Extracts are therefore made from raw beans and concentrated. This collection sits next to our other plant extracts and herbs, and the extracts here come from either Coffea arabica or Coffea canephora robusta.
Reading the label without getting lost
Green coffee labels often lead with big numbers: 5,000 mg, 8,000 mg, sometimes 20,000 mg. That is almost never the amount of extract in the capsule. It is the whole bean equivalent, calculated from a concentration ratio such as 12:1 or 20:1. The real extract is usually a few hundred milligrams. Two figures tell you far more: the milligrams of extract and the percentage of chlorogenic acids it is standardised to, commonly 45 to 50 percent. Many formulas also add Chromium, a mineral that European rules do allow claims for, unlike the coffee extract itself.
Forms in this collection
The choice here is smaller than the marketing suggests, and that is useful.
- Capsules with one standardised extract: the clearest option, because the caffeine and chlorogenic acid content per capsule are stated.
- Small tablets: easier to swallow, and often a lower extract dose per tablet, so you can build up gradually.
- Combination formulas: extract plus chromium, cinnamon or kelp, which suits you only if you actually want those extras.
Loose powder is rare, mainly because raw coffee extract tastes bitter. If you want a plant extract with a different compound profile, green tea extract is the nearest neighbour.
How we choose the green coffee in our range
We look at three things: the form of the extract, the dose, and whether a combination makes sense. We prefer extracts standardised to a stated percentage of chlorogenic acids, because an unstandardised green coffee powder tells you nothing about what you take. We also want the caffeine per capsule printed on the label, not hidden inside a blend. We leave out crash-diet formulas built on promises rather than evidence, and blends that stack several stimulants at once. Who it suits, and what to expect
Green coffee extract suits adults who are already working on weight management through food and movement, and who want a standardised plant extract alongside that. It replaces neither. We are direct about the evidence: the studies on body weight are small and short, and the European food safety authority (EFSA) has approved no health claim for green coffee or chlorogenic acid. So we describe it as what it is, a concentrated coffee extract with a modest caffeine content, used as one steady part of a routine rather than the engine of it. That honesty is also practical. Because the caffeine is real, count it in your daily total, take your capsule earlier in the day if you sleep lightly, and give any new supplement two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge how it fits you.
Frequently asked questions
It is an extract of coffee beans that have not been roasted. Raw beans contain chlorogenic acids, a group of plant compounds that roasting largely breaks down. The beans are soaked, dried and ground, and the extract is concentrated so those compounds end up in a capsule or tablet. Most extracts come from Coffea arabica or Coffea canephora robusta and are standardised to a set percentage of chlorogenic acids.
We will not promise that. EFSA has approved no health claim for green coffee or chlorogenic acid, so no shop in Europe may claim a slimming effect. The research that exists comes from small, short trials with mixed outcomes. What green coffee can be is one supporting element next to a diet and activity change you are already making. If you want a nutrient with an approved claim in this area, chromium is the better starting point.
Unroasted beans still contain caffeine. Extracts typically declare around 3 percent caffeine, which often works out at roughly 12 to 25 mg per capsule, far less than a cup of coffee. Always check your label, then add it to the tea, coffee and cola you already drink. EFSA has published reference amounts for caffeine from all sources:

Our own preference is a single standardised capsule, because you can see exactly what you take.
Most labels advise one or two capsules a day with food, and taking it with or shortly before a main meal is the usual pattern. Because of the caffeine, morning or early afternoon is more sensible than evening, especially if you fall asleep slowly. If you take two capsules, splitting them across two meals spreads both the extract and the caffeine. Keep the timing the same each day, so you can judge how it suits you.
Products containing this extract are for adults and are not intended for children. Because they contain caffeine, they are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, where NHS guidance is to keep total caffeine within 200 mg a day from all sources. If you are sensitive to caffeine, sleep poorly, or take prescription medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist first. High caffeine intakes can cause restlessness and disturbed sleep, which is worth weighing before you add another source.
It is the whole bean equivalent, not the content of the capsule. With a 20:1 extract, 400 mg of extract is presented as 8,000 mg of bean. A 12:1 extract at 1,000 mg becomes 12,000 mg. Neither number tells you how much chlorogenic acid you get. To compare products properly, look at the extract weight in milligrams and the standardised percentage, for example 400 mg standardised to 50 percent, which gives 200 mg of chlorogenic acids.
They are different plants with different lead compounds. Green coffee is valued for chlorogenic acids, green tea for catechins such as EGCG. Both contain caffeine, so taking them together raises your total more than people expect. Green tea extract is also subject to European restrictions on high-dose EGCG products, which is why doses are stated carefully on the label. If you want to try one at a time, that is the more informative approach anyway.
