How L-tyrosine works and which form is worth your money
L-tyrosine is one of the amino acids your body uses to build protein. It is called non-essential because your body can make it itself, from another amino acid called phenylalanine. You also get it from food: cheese, chicken, fish, eggs, soya, pumpkin seeds and almonds all contain it.
Beyond protein, your body uses tyrosine as raw material for dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline, and for thyroid hormones and melanin, the pigment in skin and hair. That is why tyrosine turns up in focus formulas and pre-workouts, and almost never in a general multivitamin.
What the research actually supports
We will be straight with you. There is no approved European health claim for tyrosine, so we make no promises about focus, mood or energy on this page. The studies that exist are narrower than the marketing suggests: single doses were tested under short, demanding conditions such as cold, noise, sleep loss or heavy multitasking. When people were rested and relaxed, the effect largely disappeared. Tyrosine looks like a supplement for demanding moments, not a daily habit for everyone.
Powder, capsules and NALT
- Free-form L-tyrosine capsules or tablets: the form used in most research. Simple, and easy to keep consistent.
- Free-form powder: the cheapest per gram and flexible if you dose by body weight. Be warned that it barely dissolves and tastes chalky, so many people stir it into juice.
- N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (NALT): tyrosine with an acetyl group added, which makes it dissolve easily. It is sold as better absorbed, but studies have not shown that it raises tyrosine levels in the blood more than the plain form. It usually costs more.

How much L-tyrosine do people take, and when?
Product labels in the UK commonly provide 500 mg per capsule, with one to three capsules a day. Studies typically used much larger single doses, calculated per kilogram of body weight, given shortly before a demanding task. That gap is worth knowing: a small capsule dose is not the same thing as a study dose. Follow the label of the product you buy, and take it before the task rather than after.
Do I take it on an empty stomach or with food?
Many people take tyrosine on an empty stomach, roughly half an hour before a meal. The reason is competition: amino acids share the same transport route into the body, so a protein-rich meal or a mixed amino acid drink means tyrosine has company. This is a practical point rather than a rule. If tyrosine on an empty stomach leaves you feeling queasy, take it with a light snack instead.
Can I combine L-tyrosine with coffee or a pre-workout?
Tyrosine is already a standard ingredient in many pre-workout formulas, usually alongside caffeine, so check the label before adding a separate capsule and doubling up. Tyrosine itself is not a stimulant, so it will not give you a caffeine-style kick on its own. If you are sensitive to stimulants, keep the total caffeine modest and see how you respond before adding more of anything.
Are there people who should not take tyrosine supplements?
Yes, and this is the part worth reading twice. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first if you take thyroid medication such as levothyroxine, if you have an overactive thyroid or Graves' disease, if you take a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or if you take levodopa for Parkinson's. Tyrosine is not recommended for children, and safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) should only use it under specialist supervision.
How soon should I notice anything, and what if I do not?
Tyrosine is not a build-up supplement, so there is no two to three week loading period. It is taken shortly before the demanding moment, which makes it easy to test: use it on one hard day and compare with a similar day without it. If you notice nothing, that is a genuine outcome, not a fault. The research suggests the effect shows up mainly when you are stressed, cold or short on sleep, and much less when you are rested and eating enough protein.
Does taking tyrosine support the thyroid, since thyroid hormones are built from it?
Thyroid hormones are indeed built by attaching iodine to tyrosine, which is why tyrosine appears in thyroid support blends. That chemistry does not mean extra tyrosine improves thyroid function. In a normal diet with enough protein, tyrosine is rarely the limiting factor, and a supplement is never a replacement for prescribed thyroid medication.
