- Drops and sprays: handy for vitamin D and B12 if you dislike swallowing pills, and easy to adjust dose by dose.
- Powders: the practical choice for gram doses of magnesium, creatine and protein, where capsules would mean five or six a day.
- Gummies: pleasant to take, usually lower dosed and often with added sugar. A fine start, rarely the strongest option.

Be realistic about timing. Nutrient levels build up slowly, so plan on two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge anything, and longer for stores that were low to begin with. A supplement fills a gap in what you eat; it does not replace the meal. That is not a reason to skip it, it is the reason to keep your base short and take it properly.
Two practical points we would tell our own family. First, check labels across products: if your multivitamin and your separate vitamin D both contain 25 mcg, you are taking double. Second, if you use anticoagulant medication, speak to your GP before starting anything with vitamin K, including D3-K2 combinations, because vitamin K interacts with these medicines.

Consistency beats clock-watching, but a few rules help. Take fat-soluble nutrients, vitamins A, D, E and K plus omega-3, with a meal that contains some fat, because they absorb better that way. B vitamins suit the morning, since some people find them stimulating late in the day. Magnesium is commonly taken in the evening. Protein and creatine fit around training. Anchoring your routine to breakfast is the simplest way to avoid missed days.
Plan on two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge a supplement, and longer if your levels were low to begin with. Nutrient stores refill gradually rather than overnight. Some effects are also not something you feel at all: keeping your vitamin D topped up in winter is maintenance, not a sensation. Creatine and protein are the exception, where changes in training performance can show within a few weeks of steady use.
Usually yes, but add up the labels first. The most common mistake is doubling a nutrient: a multivitamin plus a separate vitamin D, or two products both containing zinc. Taking too much of a single vitamin or mineral can be harmful, so check totals against the amount on each pack. Practical spacing helps too. Iron absorbs better away from calcium and tea, and calcium is better split across the day than taken in one large dose.
It depends on the dosing. Many multivitamins spread small amounts across twenty or more nutrients, which is fine as general cover but too low where you actually have a gap. A multivitamin with 5 mcg of vitamin D, for example, gives half the UK recommendation. Our approach is a well-dosed multivitamin as a base, then one or two single nutrients at meaningful amounts for the gaps you know you have. That is cheaper and clearer than five overlapping products.
Speak to your GP or pharmacist first, and bring the labels. Three points come up most often. Vitamin K, including D3-K2 combinations, interacts with anticoagulant medication. Pregnant women should avoid supplements containing vitamin A as retinol and liver products, and are advised to take folic acid. St John's wort affects many prescription medicines. None of this makes supplements off limits, it simply decides which product in this collection is the sensible one for you.
