How supplements for skin, hair and nails actually work
Beauty supplements are not one ingredient. On this page you will find collagen in powders and capsules, biotin, zinc, selenium, vitamin C, silica and hyaluronic acid, plus complete formulas that combine several of them. What they share is a link with the tissue you can see: skin, hair and nails.
European rules keep the wording tight, and that is useful when you compare labels. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin. Copper contributes to normal hair pigmentation. Form and dose decide more than the front of the pack
Collagen has no approved health claim in Europe, so we describe it plainly instead. Hydrolysed peptides are collagen cut into small fragments, which makes the powder dissolve easily. Marine collagen delivers mainly type I, the type found in skin. Bovine collagen gives type I and III. Research that reports any change uses roughly 2.5 to 10 grams a day, so a single 500 mg capsule will not get you there. Powders reach those amounts at a lower cost per gram, which is why most of our collagen range lists grams per serving.
Biotin is where dosing gets strange. Products of 5,000 or 10,000 mcg are common, yet extra biotin only helps if your intake was low, and for most people it is not. High intakes can also distort some laboratory blood tests, including thyroid tests, so tell your doctor if you take it before blood work. Zinc is the opposite case: small amounts, but form matters. Bisglycinate and citrate are absorbed better than oxide and sit more comfortably on an empty stomach.

Match the format to the amount you need and to the habit you can keep. Large gram doses only work in a powder or drink. Small microgram doses fit fine in a capsule or tablet.

Plan for eight to twelve weeks of daily use. The reason is simple biology: you only see new tissue once it has grown out. Nails grow roughly 3 mm a month, so a full nail takes months to replace. Scalp hair grows around 1 cm a month. Skin comfort and hydration can change sooner, sometimes within a few weeks. If nothing has shifted after three consistent months, the product or the dose was probably not the right one for you.
Usually not. Biotin earns its approved wording at modest amounts, and extra biotin only makes a difference if your intake was low to begin with. Most UK diets supply enough, since it is found in eggs, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. There is also a practical catch: high biotin intake can distort some laboratory blood tests, including thyroid tests. Mention your supplement before blood work so results are read correctly.
Marine collagen comes from fish skin and scales and is mainly type I, the type found in skin. Bovine collagen provides type I and III. Both are usually hydrolysed, meaning cut into small fragments that dissolve easily. There is no true vegan collagen, because collagen is an animal protein. Vegan products instead supply the building blocks and cofactors, such as vitamin C, amino acids and silica. We label which is which, so you are not guessing.
Some, but check the label carefully. UK guidance is to avoid supplements containing vitamin A, including fish liver oils, and to avoid liver during pregnancy, because too much vitamin A can harm the baby. Several beauty formulas include vitamin A or retinyl palmitate, so read the panel rather than the front of the box. Folic acid and vitamin D are the supplements usually advised in pregnancy. Ask your midwife or GP before adding anything else.

You can, but add up the overlapping nutrients first. A complete beauty formula, a separate zinc tablet and a multivitamin can easily triple the same mineral. Zinc and selenium are the two to watch, because both have clear supplement limits and both appear in almost every hair and nail formula. Water-soluble vitamins are more forgiving, though large amounts of vitamin C can upset the stomach.
