How to choose a conditioner that fits your hair type
Conditioner does one job well. It smooths the outer layer of each hair, the cuticle, so strands lie flat and slide past each other. That is why hair feels softer and combs through without tugging after washing. Most formulas are slightly acidic, which helps the cuticle close again after shampooing. The honest limit: a conditioner changes how your hair looks and behaves, it does not rebuild the inside of a strand for good. What it does do, every wash, is reduce the pulling and snapping that comes with detangling rough, dry hair.
Four formats, four different jobs
A rinse-out conditioner sits on the hair for one to three minutes and is then washed out. That is the default for most people. Solid conditioner bars do the same work without water and without a plastic bottle, so a bar goes further per gram. It needs a moment under the tap to soften before you glide it down your lengths. A leave-in stays in damp hair and keeps working while it dries. A mask is thicker again and sits for five to ten minutes, once a week.
Choose by hair thickness, not by hair length
Fine hair is weighed down quickly, so lightweight lotions and gel-creams work better than rich butters. Thick, coarse or curly hair usually needs the opposite: shea butter, plant oils or a formula that stays in. Bleached and coloured hair benefits from added proteins such as hydrolysed keratin, which cling to damaged spots on the cuticle.
Three habits change the result more than the brand does:
- Apply from mid-lengths to ends, and keep two to three centimetres away from the roots.
- Rinse longer than feels necessary. Residue is the usual reason hair looks flat.
- In hard water areas, common across much of the UK, leave it on the full three minutes.

If your scalp gets oily fast and your hair is short, one small amount on the ends is plenty, and you may prefer a light rinse-out over anything that stays in. Curls, coils and hair that frizzes the moment it dries usually do better with a product that stays in the hair after the shower. Whichever you pick, judge it after two or three washes rather than one, and pair it with a cleansing step that is not stripping your hair in the first place.

How much conditioner should I use, and where do I put it?
Start with an amount about the size of a coin for mid-length hair, and scale up for long or thick hair. Squeeze the excess water out of your hair first, otherwise the product slides straight off. Work it from the ends upwards through the mid-lengths, staying two to three centimetres clear of the roots. Roots produce their own oil and do not need it. Then rinse thoroughly, because leftover product is what makes hair look limp.
Can I use conditioner every day?
Yes, if you wash daily and keep it off the roots. Conditioner is not a treatment you need to space out. The practical question is whether your hair can carry it. Fine hair often prefers a lightweight formula and a short contact time, while dry or coloured hair rarely complains. If your hair starts to feel coated after a week or two, use less product per wash before you switch brands.
Why does conditioner leave my hair greasy or flat?
Usually one of three things. You applied it too close to the scalp, you used more than your hair can carry, or you rinsed too briefly. Work through them in that order before blaming the formula. Rich butters and oils can also be too heavy for fine hair, in which case a lighter lotion or gel-cream gives the same slip without the weight. If build-up has crept in over weeks, a deeper cleanse resets it.
Does conditioner help bleached or coloured hair?
It helps the way the hair looks and handles, which matters a lot after bleaching. Chemical processing roughens the cuticle, so strands snag and colour looks dull. Conditioners with hydrolysed proteins such as keratin attach to those damaged spots and smooth the surface, making combing safer. Bond care ranges go a step further and work on the internal links inside the strand. Neither turns bleached hair back into virgin hair, and no product should promise that.
Do conditioner bars work as well as bottled conditioner?
A well-made bar contains the same conditioning agents as a liquid, minus most of the water, which is why it lasts longer and travels without spilling. Two honest points. The application is different: soften the bar under the tap and glide it down the lengths, or rub it between your palms first. And if you are coming from silicone-heavy products, hair can feel waxy or heavier for the first one to two weeks while build-up clears. Give it that time before judging.
