How hair thickening products work and which form suits your hair
Hair thickeners do not grow hair. They make the hair you already have look fuller, from the first use. That is the honest starting point on this page. It also explains why the form you choose matters more than the promise on the packaging.
Fibres, sprays and styling products work in different ways
Keratin fibres are tiny protein particles that you shake or spray onto dry hair. They carry a static charge and your hair carries the opposite charge, so they cling to each strand and fill the gaps between them. That gives the densest cover for a wide parting or a thinning crown. They need existing hair to hold on to, so a fully bare patch stays bare.
Thickening sprays coat the hair and tint the scalp underneath, so pale skin shows through less. One pass takes seconds and works well at the back of the head, where you cannot see what your hands are doing. Cover is lighter than with fibres. Many people use a spray on weekdays and keep fibres for events.
Volumising styling products such as mousses, root sprays and thickening lotions build body at the root and wash out. They add lift, not cover, so they suit fine hair that falls flat rather than hair with visible gaps. You will find those in our styling range.
What these products can and cannot do
Fibres and sprays are cosmetic. They wash out, they do not slow hair loss, and they do not change hair density. What they do change is contrast: dark hair against pale scalp is what makes thinning obvious in daylight and in photos. Close that gap and the hair reads as fuller. For a route that works on the hair itself, people often compare this category with topical minoxidil solutions, which follow a much slower timeline.
- Apply on dry, clean hair. Fibres do not bond well to damp or oily hair.
- Build in thin layers and pat gently, never rub.
- Finish with a fixing spray if you cycle, train or expect rain.
- Match the shade to your roots, not to your lengths.
This category is not only for men with a thinning crown. Finer hair after pregnancy, hair that thins with age and patchy areas from alopecia are common reasons people buy here. If shedding is sudden or recent, a GP or trichologist is the better first step, and a concealer can bridge the time in between. Support from the inside is a separate and slower route, which is why we keep supplements for hair growth in their own collection.
How we choose the thickeners we stock
We look at three things: what the fibre is made from, how many shades a range offers, and whether the product needs a separate fixing spray to stay put. Keratin from wool holds to the hair better than cotton based alternatives, so those come first. A range with only two or three shades is the main reason people give up on this category, so we prefer wider shade sets. We buy directly from the brands, every product passes our compliance check, and we test in house with independent lab spot checks. Read how we select brands and products.
Frequently asked questions
What are hair thickening products?
They are cosmetic products that make thinning or fine hair look denser straight away. The main groups are keratin fibres, thickening sprays, thickening powders and volumising styling products. Fibres and sprays hide the contrast between hair and scalp. Volumising styling products lift the hair at the root instead. None of them change how much hair grows, which is why the effect lasts until your next wash.
Do hair thickeners really work on thinning hair?
On thinning hair, yes, within limits. Fibres and sprays need existing strands to bind to or coat, so they work best where hair has become sparse but is still there. On a fully bald area there is nothing for them to hold on to, and the result looks flat. Expect an instant cosmetic effect, judged in normal daylight and in photos, not a change in hair density over time.
Which form should I choose: fibres, spray or volumising styling?
It depends on how much scalp shows and how much time you have in the morning.
| Form | Cover | Application | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keratin fibres | Densest | Several steps | Wide parting, crown |
| Thickening spray | Medium | Seconds | Daily use, back of head |
| Thickening powder | Light to medium | Quick | Small areas, hairline |
| Volumising styling | No scalp cover | During styling | Fine, flat hair |
Combining is common: spray on workdays, fibres for occasions.
How do I apply hair fibres so they look natural?
Style your hair first and let it dry fully. Then shake or spray small amounts over the sparse areas and pat the hair gently so the fibres settle between the strands. Build up in layers instead of applying one heavy dose. Work from the back of the head forwards and keep the hairline lightest, since a hard front edge is what looks artificial. A second mirror helps for the crown.
Do hair fibres wash out, and will they rub off on my pillow?
They wash out with a normal wash, no special remover needed, and you can pick a mild formula from our shampoo collection. Without a fixing spray, some transfer onto a pillow, a collar or a hat is realistic, especially with heavy application. A light layer plus a sealing spray keeps most of it in place through wind, rain and sweat. We would still wash it out before bed.
Can I use a thickener together with minoxidil or after a hair transplant?
Most fibres and sprays sit on the hair and do not block a topical routine, as long as you apply the topical treatment first, let it dry, then add the thickener. After a transplant the rule is different: keep concealers off the scalp until your clinic says the area has healed, usually several weeks. Follow the clinic instructions over any product label, since healing times vary per person.
How do I pick the right shade?
Match your roots, not your lengths, because that is where scalp shows through. If your hair is coloured, the root regrowth colour is the reference. When you sit between two shades, take the lighter one: a shade that is too dark reads as a shadow and looks obvious in sunlight. Grey and salt and pepper hair usually needs a dedicated grey or light shade, or a mix of two.
Are hair thickeners suitable for a sensitive scalp, children or during pregnancy?
Keratin fibres are protein particles that stay on the surface and rinse away, and they are used on children with patchy hair loss. Sprays contain propellants and pigments, so check the label if your scalp reacts easily and test a small area first. There is no reason a surface concealer is a problem during pregnancy, but if hair loss started after birth, ask your midwife or GP about the cause before buying a routine.
