Liquid vitamins and herbal drops: how the format works
What a drop actually is
Drops are liquid supplements you dose with a pipette or a dropper cap. The nutrient sits in a carrier liquid, and that carrier decides a lot. Fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamin D3, vitamin A, vitamin E and K2 need an oil base, usually MCT oil (a light fraction of coconut oil) or olive oil. Water-soluble nutrients such as B12, iodine and zinc sit in water with glycerol, and herbal tinctures often sit in alcohol. So if a fat-soluble nutrient comes in a watery drop, check the label. That is one reason we prefer vitamin D3 in oil.
Dosing per drop, and its honest limits
The real advantage of this format is control. The label states the amount per drop or per millilitre, so you can take one drop, two, or half a pipette. That helps with children, with a higher winter dose and a lower summer dose, and for anyone who struggles with supplements in capsules. The limit: drop size is not laboratory-exact. Thick oil runs slower and forms bigger drops than water. Hold the bottle upright, not at an angle, and use the pipette markings when a product has them.
Under the tongue: useful, not magic
Many drops say sublingual. You hold the liquid under your tongue for about 30 seconds before swallowing, so part of the nutrient passes through the lining of the mouth. This is popular for B12 with methylcobalamin, and vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. For most other nutrients, simply swallowing works just as well. Choose drops because they are easy to take and easy to dose, not because you expect more from the same nutrient.

Two practical notes. Drops taste of what is in them. Fish oil and herbal tinctures are noticeably bitter, and a cold drink masks that well. Most bottles also keep for one to three months once opened, so check the label, store them cool and dark, and keep them out of reach of children, because the liquid is concentrated. With a daily vitamin or mineral, expect effects after two to three weeks of consistent use. Flexible dosing makes that routine easier to keep up.

Fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamin D3, A, E and K2 are best taken with a meal that contains some fat. They already sit in oil, but a meal still helps uptake. Water-soluble drops such as B12 or iodine can be taken at any time. Shake the bottle first if the label asks for it, hold it upright over your mouth or a spoon, and count the drops before you swallow.
NHS guidance names a daily amount for autumn and winter, and a safe upper limit. Most vitamin D drops are built around 10 micrograms, which equals 400 IU, per one or two drops.

Source: NHSDrops are the usual format for babies and toddlers, because there is nothing to chew or swallow whole. Use a product made for that age, follow the label, and never scale an adult dose down by eye. NHS guidance is that babies under one year need 8.5 to 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day, but babies having more than 500 ml of infant formula daily do not need a supplement, because formula is already fortified.
Source: NHSShorter than tablets. Once air reaches the liquid, oil-based drops can slowly oxidise and water-based drops rely on their preservative. Most labels give one to three months after opening. Store the bottle cool, dark and closed, and do not keep it above a warm hob or on a sunny windowsill. If an oil-based drop starts to smell sharp or rancid, replace it rather than finishing the bottle.
Three cases are worth checking. NHS guidance is that people who are pregnant should avoid supplements containing vitamin A, so read the label on multi-nutrient drops. If you take anticoagulant medication, speak to your doctor before using drops with vitamin K, because vitamin K affects how that medication works. Herbal tinctures often contain alcohol, which not everyone wants, especially for children. Concentrated drops also look harmless, so store them out of reach.
