Choosing a daily multivitamin: amounts, forms and formats
What a multivitamin is for
A multivitamin puts a range of vitamins and minerals into one daily dose, usually around the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) printed on UK labels. Think of it as a baseline that covers the small gaps most weeks leave behind. It is not a fix for one low nutrient. If a blood test or your diet points at a single shortfall, one single vitamin at a proper dose usually does more than a multi that gives you a fraction of everything.
Two things decide whether a formula earns its price: how much of each nutrient it holds and which form that nutrient takes. A label with 26 entries looks generous, but several of them can sit at a token percentage of the NRV. Vitamin D is the useful yardstick in the UK: the NHS names 10 mcg (400 IU) a day for adults, and many multis stop well below that. If yours does, add vitamin D3 on its own in the darker months rather than doubling your multi.
Forms worth looking for on the label
- Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) rather than D2. D3 is the form the body makes in sunlight.
- Methylcobalamin or adenosylcobalamin for B12, forms the body uses without a conversion step.
- Methylfolate instead of plain folic acid, for the same reason.
- Magnesium as citrate or bisglycinate, not oxide. Oxide is cheap and poorly absorbed, so a large number on the label can mean little in practice.
- Iron only where it belongs. Plenty of adult multis leave iron out deliberately, because men and post-menopausal women rarely need extra. Choose an iron-containing multi only if you know you need it.

It suits people with a narrow or changing diet, plant-based eaters who need reliable B12, iodine and D3, adults over 50 whose absorption of B12 drops, and anyone in a stretch of long days and rushed meals. It also suits people who would rather take one product than five. Be realistic about what you will feel. If your intake was already adequate, a multivitamin is quiet insurance and you will notice nothing. Where a low intake of B vitamins, iron or vitamin D was involved, most people report a difference in tiredness after two to three weeks of daily use, not overnight. That steady, unspectacular support is exactly what a multi is good at.

Most adult multivitamins combine the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, vitamin C, the eight B vitamins, and a group of minerals such as zinc, iodine, selenium, magnesium and sometimes iron. Amounts are usually expressed as a percentage of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV), the daily figure used on UK labels. Formulas differ a lot: a children's multi, a 50+ formula and a men's multi contain the same nutrient names at very different amounts.
The format decides how likely you are to take it every day, which matters more than small differences between them.

Gummies rarely carry a complete mineral profile, because minerals are bulky and taste bitter. Read the label before you switch.
Take it with a meal. Vitamins A, D, E and K need some fat in the meal to be absorbed properly, and food also reduces the mild nausea that iron or zinc can cause on an empty stomach. Breakfast or lunch works well for most people. If a formula is split into two daily tablets, spread them across two meals. The specific hour matters far less than taking it on the same occasion every day.
Honest answer: often nothing dramatic, and that is not a failure. If your intake was already adequate, a multivitamin keeps levels topped up without any noticeable change. Where an intake of B vitamins, iron or vitamin D was genuinely low, people usually report less tiredness after two to three weeks of daily use. Nutrient levels in the body move slowly, so judge a formula over a month or two rather than a week.

Usually yes, but add up the overlaps first. The nutrients worth checking are vitamin A, iron, zinc and vitamin D, because a multi plus a single product can quietly double them. The NHS advises keeping vitamin A from food and supplements combined below 1.5 mg (1,500 µg) a day, and advises against vitamin A supplements altogether if you eat liver weekly. Fish liver oil counts towards that total, so read both labels.
Often, yes. A plant-based diet supplies little vitamin B12 and iodine, and vitamin D3 is commonly made from sheep's wool lanolin, which is not vegan. Look for a formula that states vegan D3 from lichen, includes B12 as methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin, and lists iodine rather than leaving it out. A general multi may still be too light on B12, so many plant-based eaters add a separate B12 product on top.
Only a formula made for it. NHS guidance is to avoid supplements and multivitamins containing vitamin A as retinol during pregnancy, because too much can harm the baby's development, and to avoid liver, liver products and fish liver oil for the same reason.
