Choosing Irish sea moss: forms, iodine and honest expectations
Irish sea moss is a red seaweed called Chondrus crispus. It grows on rocky Atlantic coasts, from Ireland and Brittany to the Caribbean, where closely related species are often sold under the same name. Dried, it becomes a food supplement in capsules, powder, gel or gummies. Two things drive the interest: its minerals, iodine above all, and its soluble fibre, which is why sea moss thickens into a gel in water.
You will often read that sea moss contains 92 of the body's 102 minerals. We do not repeat that line, because no label can back it up per serving. What does hold up is simpler. Sea moss supplies iodine, and where a product declares a significant amount, iodine contributes to normal thyroid function. Iodine also contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. The other minerals are there, but usually in small amounts per dose. If you want one mineral at a fixed, stated amount, a labelled iodine product is more predictable than seaweed. The forms differ more than the labels suggest
- Raw dried sea moss: you soak and blend it yourself. Cheapest per gram, most work, and the iodine content is whatever that batch happens to hold.
- Gel: ready to spoon into smoothies or porridge. It needs the fridge and has a short shelf life, so it suits daily users, not occasional ones.
- Capsules and powder: the concentration is usually written as an extract ratio, such as 4:1 or 15:1. A ratio tells you how much raw seaweed went in, not how much iodine comes out.
- Gummies: the easiest to take and normally the lowest amount of sea moss, with added sugars or sweeteners.

Who it suits, and what to expect
Sea moss suits people who prefer a whole-food supplement over an isolated nutrient, and it is popular with plant-based eaters, who often get little iodine from their diet. It also appeals if you already use algae such as spirulina powder and want to vary your routine.
Be honest with yourself about what it is. Sea moss is a source of minerals and fibre, not a replacement for a multivitamin, and the iodine content genuinely varies between species, harvests and processing methods. In the UK, adults need 140 micrograms of iodine a day, and NHS advice is not to take more than 0.5 mg a day from supplements. That is why we recommend one sea moss product at the stated dose rather than stacking it with a multivitamin that also contains iodine. If you have a thyroid condition, take thyroid medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP before you start. Used consistently, it becomes a steady part of a varied diet rather than something you feel from one spoonful.

Capsules give the steadiest routine; gel gives the most versatility in the kitchen.
Follow the amount on the label, because concentrations differ enormously. Gels are commonly used at one to two tablespoons a day, while capsules often provide the equivalent of one to a few grams of dried seaweed. Taking more is not better: with sea moss the limiting factor is iodine, not the seaweed itself. Take it with food or a drink, at a time you will remember, and keep to one sea moss product at a time.
Sea moss labels rarely state a guaranteed iodine figure, so it helps to know the reference points. UK advice and EFSA reference values differ slightly, which is normal.

Gel is a fresh product, so keep it in the fridge from the moment it arrives and use a clean spoon each time. Most gels are meant to be used within two to three weeks; freezing in portions extends that considerably. If the smell turns sharp or the texture separates and thins, throw it out. Dried sea moss, powder and capsules are far less demanding: a cool, dry cupboard away from light is enough.
Be realistic here. Sea moss is a food supplement that tops up minerals and adds a little soluble fibre, so it works quietly rather than noticeably. If your iodine intake was low, any effect on how you feel builds over weeks, not days, and we would judge it after two to three months of consistent use rather than one jar. People who eat fish, dairy and eggs regularly already get iodine from food, so the change is usually smaller.
Plain sea moss gives you one seaweed at a stated amount. Blends add bladderwrack, which is a brown seaweed with a much higher and more variable iodine content, and burdock root, a botanical with no relation to iodine. We prefer plain sea moss for one reason: with a blend you cannot tell where your iodine is coming from, and stacking two seaweeds makes the total harder to judge. If you want a blend, check that each ingredient is listed with its own amount.
Speak to your GP first in all three cases. Iodine drives thyroid hormone production, so both too little and too much can disturb it, and people with an existing thyroid condition are the most sensitive to a change in intake. If you take levothyroxine, an irregular iodine intake can make your test results harder to interpret. In pregnancy, iodine needs rise but a measured supplement is the more predictable route, because seaweed content varies from batch to batch.
