What green lipped mussel is and how the two forms differ
Green lipped mussel is the everyday name for Perna canaliculus, a shellfish farmed in the coastal waters of New Zealand. It is one of the few marine ingredients in our herbs and plants range. The mussel meat is stabilised and dried soon after harvest, then either filled into capsules as a whole powder or pressed into an oil. Same animal, two clearly different products.
Powder keeps the whole mussel, oil concentrates the fats
Freeze-dried powder keeps the broad profile of the mussel: marine fats, protein, minerals and glycosaminoglycans, a group of compounds that also occurs in cartilage. Capsules usually hold 500 mg of powder, taken once or twice a day. Oil extracts contain only the fat fraction, drawn out with cold pressing or CO2. That fraction carries EPA and DHA plus a rarer omega-3 called ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid), which ordinary fish oil contains very little of. A few hundred milligrams of oil stands in for several grams of powder, and costs more per capsule.
Processing decides more here than the milligram number on the front of the pack. If the mussel meat is not stabilised quickly after harvest, its fats oxidise and lose their character. Powder that has had the lipids taken out for oil products also reaches the market, cheaper and with less fat left in it. So we read labels for the drying or extraction method, not only for the dose. The strong marine smell many buyers mention is normal: it comes from the mussel, not from a fault in the capsule.

Oil extracts are dosed far lower, sometimes only a few hundred milligrams, because the fats are concentrated. Comparing two products by their headline milligrams tells you little unless both are the same form. Do not exceed the stated intake on the pack.
