What is actually inside a garlic supplement
Garlic is the bulb of Allium sativum. An intact clove contains alliin, a stable sulphur compound. Crush or cut the clove and an enzyme called alliinase turns alliin into allicin. Allicin gives fresh garlic its smell and its bite, and it breaks down quickly. That single piece of chemistry explains why two garlic products can look almost the same on the shelf and be very different inside.
Labels make this harder than it needs to be. One pack states a fresh garlic equivalent of 5,000mg, another gives an allicin yield in micrograms, a third names S-allyl cysteine, usually shortened to SAC. The standardised compound is the useful number, not the equivalent. An equivalent only tells you how much raw garlic the extract started from. It says nothing about what survived drying, heating or extraction. Across herbal supplements, garlic is one of the clearest examples of that gap.
The main forms are not interchangeable
- Odourless garlic oil softgels. Garlic distilled or steeped in oil. Mild and easy to take, containing the oil-soluble compounds that allicin turns into.
- Enteric coated garlic powder tablets. The coating survives stomach acid, so allicin can still form further down. Here a stated allicin yield means something.
- Aged garlic extract. Garlic aged for many months. It contains no allicin and is standardised to SAC instead, which is water soluble and stable.
- Black garlic. Slowly heated garlic, mild in taste, also measured by SAC rather than allicin.
Because the compounds differ, findings on one form do not automatically apply to another. That is why we name the form and the standardisation on every product page, next to related bulbs and roots such as ginger root.

We look at three things before a garlic product goes live: the form, what it is standardised to, and the daily dose. We prefer labels that state an allicin yield or a SAC content, because a fresh garlic equivalent on its own tells you very little. Very high equivalent numbers without standardisation do not impress us. Who it suits and what to expect
Most people take garlic in capsule form as a steady daily habit alongside cooking with fresh cloves. A supplement is a convenient, measured amount, not a replacement for garlic in food. If odour or aftertaste has put you off before, an enteric coated tablet or an aged extract is the practical answer, since both keep the reactive compounds away from your mouth and stomach.
Take garlic with a meal to reduce the chance of reflux or a warm stomach, and give it two to three weeks of consistent daily use before you judge it. Softgels often use bovine gelatine, so check the shell if you eat plant based. Be honest with yourself about the evidence too: the European food safety authority has approved no health claim for garlic, so we describe compounds, forms and doses rather than promise outcomes. If you have reacted badly to raw garlic before, start with an aged extract.
No, and we would not sell it that way. Fresh garlic in cooking gives you the whole bulb, plus flavour. A supplement gives you a fixed, repeatable amount without the odour, which is why many people use both.
Heating changes garlic chemistry: cooking deactivates the enzyme that makes allicin. Letting crushed garlic stand for a few minutes before it hits the pan preserves more of it. A standardised supplement simply removes that variability.
Follow the dose on the pack, which is usually one capsule or tablet a day, and take it with a meal. Food reduces the chance of reflux, a warm stomach or a repeating taste, the three complaints we hear most.
Give it two to three weeks of consistent use before deciding whether it suits you. Garlic is a slow, steady supplement rather than something you feel the same day, and skipping days makes it harder to judge.
Mostly, yes, though the reason differs per form. Aged garlic extract contains no allicin, so there is little left to smell. Garlic oil softgels are enclosed and mild. Enteric coated tablets pass the stomach intact, which limits the repeating taste.
Honest nuance: deodorising can also reduce the reactive sulphur compounds a product delivers. That is a trade-off, not a flaw. If odour is your main barrier, it is a trade worth making.
The garlic itself is plant based, but the shell often is not. Many softgels use bovine gelatine, and some tablets use animal-derived glazing agents. Plant-based alternatives exist, usually cellulose or pullulan capsules, and tablets are frequently suitable too.
Always check the ingredient list rather than the front of the pack. If you filter for vegan supplements, you only see products where the shell has been checked as well as the contents.
Ask your GP or pharmacist first. Concentrated garlic is not the same as garlic on your plate. Compounds such as ajoene affect how platelets stick together, and that effect lasts for days, so it can add to the action of anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines.
Surgical teams commonly ask patients to stop garlic supplements one to two weeks before surgery or dental procedures. Garlic can also interact with certain antiviral and transplant medicines. Mention it when you list your supplements.
Health claims on food supplements must be authorised before they can be used. For garlic, no claim has been approved: the applications submitted under the European rules remain unauthorised or on hold, which means no shop may legally state that garlic supports cholesterol, blood pressure or immunity.
