Garcinia cambogia and HCA: what the label tells you
Garcinia cambogia is the older, more familiar name for Garcinia gummi-gutta, a small tropical fruit from South and South-East Asia. It looks like a green pumpkin and tastes sharply sour, which is why the rind has long been used in Indian and Indonesian cooking. It is one of the more debated entries in our range of herbal supplements. Capsules and tablets do not contain the whole fruit. They contain an extract of the rind, standardised for hydroxycitric acid, usually shortened to HCA.
The HCA figure decides what you are actually buying
Two products can both print 1000 mg on the front and still give you very different amounts of HCA. The dried rind holds only a modest share of HCA by weight. Concentrated extracts are stronger, and good ones state their HCA percentage on the label. Extracts standardised to roughly 50 to 60 percent HCA are the most studied, so that is the range we look for. If a label gives an extract weight but no HCA figure, you cannot work out your intake. Reviews of the UK market found exactly this gap: many listings say garcinia extract and nothing more.
Three formats, three different things to check
- Standardised extract: the HCA percentage is declared, so the daily amount is calculable.
- Whole fruit powder: milder, but the HCA content is often left unstated.
- Combination formulas: garcinia alongside ingredients such as chromium, green tea or fibre.
Combinations are not automatically better. They only help if every ingredient is listed with its own amount. Blends that hide the split behind one total weight make judgement impossible, so we leave those out.
What the evidence and the rules currently say
Be clear-eyed here. Trials of HCA report small and inconsistent effects on body weight, and no health claim for garcinia cambogia is authorised in the UK or the EU. That means no product may promise appetite control or fat loss, and we will not imply it either. Regulators are still working on it: EFSA has a draft safety opinion on HCA out for consultation, the UK Committee on Toxicity is reviewing the same evidence, and France has restricted these supplements. If your goal is losing weight sensibly, treat garcinia as an optional extra, never as the plan itself.

It depends on how much control you want over the amount you take. A standardised extract is the only form where you can calculate your intake. Most labels suggest splitting the daily amount across two or three servings, taken with water shortly before meals. That pattern comes from the way the studies were run, not from proof that timing changes the outcome. Take it with food if capsules feel harsh on an empty stomach. Always follow the dose on the pack you bought, because strengths differ widely between products, and never combine two garcinia products to reach a higher total.
Honestly: many people notice nothing measurable. Study periods ran from two to twelve weeks, and the average difference against placebo was small, under a kilogram in the most cited analysis. If you decide to try it, give it at least four weeks of consistent use alongside a diet you can actually keep up, and judge it on that. If nothing changes, that is a normal outcome for this ingredient rather than a sign you took it wrongly.
