Echinacea supplements: species, plant parts and forms
Echinacea is a flowering plant from the daisy family, also known as purple coneflower. It grows wild in North America and is now farmed across Europe, including Switzerland and Germany. About ten species exist, but only three are used in supplements and herbal products: Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea pallida. Purpurea is the most studied of the three, which is why it appears on most British labels. Like many plant-based supplements, echinacea is bought seasonally, mostly between October and March.
The species and the plant part say more than the milligrams
Two echinacea products with the same number on the front can be very different inside. Some use only the root, some the aerial parts (leaf, stem and flower), some a set ratio of both. Fresh plant extracts and dried herb extracts differ in taste and in the compounds they carry.
Then there is the extract ratio, printed as something like 6-7:1. That means roughly six to seven parts of dried herb are concentrated into one part of extract. So 70 mg of a 6-7:1 root extract stands for around 430 to 500 mg of root. A label shouting 1000 mg may simply be listing plain powder. Read the extract line, not the headline number.
Forms differ in practical ways rather than in strength. Tablets and capsules are easy to dose and simple to carry. Drops and tinctures let you adjust the amount, and many people notice a light tingle on the tongue, which comes from the plant's own alkylamides. Lozenges keep the extract in the mouth longer, which some people prefer with a scratchy throat. Effervescent tablets usually deliver less extract per serving, but they are the easiest option if you dislike swallowing tablets.

- Echinacea herbal products are not for children under 12.

Yes, there is no known problem in taking them together, and it is a common winter routine. Worth knowing: zinc and vitamin C have approved European claims for the normal function of the immune system, while echinacea does not.
