What amino acids are, and why free form matters
Amino acids are the parts that protein is built from. Your body makes most of them itself. Nine are essential, which means they have to come from your food. Supplements deliver them in free form: each amino acid sits loose in the powder or capsule, so it does not first have to be split off from a protein chain. That is why these products are dosed in grams instead of milligrams, and why a powder dissolves in water in seconds.
Two kinds of product sit side by side here. Blends cover a set: all nine essentials (EAA), or the three branched-chain aminos leucine, isoleucine and valine. Single aminos give you one amino acid at a higher dose, so you can aim at one thing rather than everything at once.
Dosage decides whether a product does anything
This is where amino acids differ most from vitamins. Research on aminos usually works with several grams per serving, not a few hundred milligrams. A capsule with 500 mg of a single amino acid means you would need a handful of them to reach the amounts studied. So we read the label per serving, not per capsule, and we say plainly when a powder is the only sensible way to reach a useful dose. Glutamine in powder form is a clear example: as capsules it becomes impractical and expensive.
How we choose the amino acids we stock
We look at three things: the form, the dose per serving, and whether a combination makes sense. We prefer free-form aminos with a full amount in one or two scoops, and we skip blends that list ten aminos in doses too small to matter. Flavoured EAA powders are fine by us, as long as the amino content is not padded out with sweeteners. Every product passes our compliance team, we test in house, and independent labs check batches. Who these products suit, and who can skip them
Aminos are most useful when your protein intake is low or hard to plan: plant-based diets, small appetite, training early in the morning, or a busy week where meals slip. If you already eat plenty of protein, an EAA powder adds little on top of that. In that case a complete protein powder is usually better value per gram, since it delivers all the essentials plus the rest.
One honest note. The EU has not approved health claims for individual amino acids, so we describe what a product contains and how people use it, and we do not promise an effect. What you can expect is practical: a measurable intake, a form you can actually take daily, and enough weeks of consistent use to judge it. Two to three weeks is a fair trial for anything you take daily, and results always sit on top of your training and your meals, not instead of them.

Powder wins when you need grams; capsules win when you travel.
With free-form aminos, timing is less strict than the label often suggests. They are absorbed quickly, so many people take a blend around training: before, during or straight after. Single aminos are usually spread through the day, or taken away from a large meal so they are not competing with a full load of dietary protein. The most important thing is consistency. A serving you actually take every day beats a perfectly timed one you forget.
Yes, and many people do. A practical approach is one blend as your base and, at most, one or two single aminos with a clear purpose. Keep them apart in the day rather than stacking everything into one scoop, so you can tell what is doing what. Note that amino acids compete for the same transport routes into the body, so very large doses taken at the same moment work against each other. L-theanine, the amino acid from green tea, is often taken separately from training servings.
Most free-form amino acids are made by fermentation, using bacteria fed on plant sugars, so the amino itself is not animal derived. The exceptions are usually in the packaging and extras: gelatine capsules, a whey or collagen base, or dairy-based flavourings. Always check the capsule material and the full ingredient list. On our product pages we state the capsule type, and vegan products are filtered as such so you do not have to guess.
Daily use at label doses is common and generally well tolerated. The complaints we hear most are practical rather than serious: bloating, loose stools, or a bitter taste when a large dose is taken at once on an empty stomach. Splitting the serving or taking it with a little food usually solves it. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, take prescribed medication, or have kidney or liver problems, check with your doctor first, since protein and amino load is relevant in those situations.
Because the EU only permits health claims that have been assessed and authorised, and individual amino acids such as leucine, glutamine or arginine do not have approved claims for muscle or recovery. Protein does have an authorised claim, which is why protein powders may say more than an EAA powder. We keep to those rules on purpose. It means we describe the form, the dose and how people use a product, and we leave the promises to others.
