What L-Theanine is, and how the strengths and forms differ

L-Theanine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks found in the leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis. It gives green tea its savoury, broth-like taste. A cup of tea holds only a small amount, which is why capsules exist: one capsule carries what several cups would. Whether the material comes from tea leaves or from fermentation, the molecule is the same. It sits alongside our other single amino acids, but people use it differently: not around training, but around a task or the evening.
What we can and cannot promise
There is no approved EU health claim for L-Theanine. The European food safety authority (EFSA) assessed claims about theanine and thinking, stress and sleep in 2011 and did not accept them. So we will not tell you how it will make you feel. What we can say is factual: studies mostly use 100 to 400 mg a day, and effects are reported within an hour or two rather than after weeks of use.
