Branched-chain amino acids: what leucine, isoleucine and valine actually do
BCAA stands for branched-chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are three of the nine essential amino acids, so your body cannot make them and has to get them from food or a supplement. Together they make up roughly a third of the protein in your muscles. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy and whey all contain them, which is why we treat these products as a top-up around training rather than a basic need within our wider range of amino acids.
The leucine number matters more than the ratio on the front
Most labels shout about a ratio: 2:1:1, 4:1:1 or even 10:1:1. That number is simply how much L-Leucine sits next to isoleucine and valine. The 2:1:1 ratio is the one used in most research, and a higher leucine ratio is not automatically better. We look at the grams first. A serving with 5 g to 10 g of BCAAs, including roughly 2.5 g leucine, is a real dose. Under 3 g total is mostly flavouring.
Powder, capsules or a ready made drink
The form decides how you will actually use it.
- Powder: cheapest per gram and easy to sip during a session. Flavoured versions mask the naturally bitter taste of pure amino acids.
- Capsules and tablets: no mixing, no flavour, handy when travelling. You often need six or more for one full serving.
- Ready to drink: convenient, more expensive per serving, sometimes with added caffeine.
How we select the BCAA products we stock
We judge three things: the form, the dose and the combinations. We prefer free form amino acids, produced separately and then blended, over cheaper sources based on hydrolysed soya protein. The label has to state the grams of leucine, isoleucine and valine per serving, not just a blend name, because a serving hiding 3 g behind sweetener is not worth your money. Extras only earn a place when they do something, for example vitamin B6, which contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism. Who they suit, and who can skip them
If you already reach your protein target with meals and a shake, extra BCAAs add little. Compare them honestly with protein powders and shakes, which give you all nine essential amino acids for a similar price. BCAAs earn their place in narrower situations: fasted morning training, a calorie deficit, or a long session where a flavoured drink means you simply drink more.
Be clear about what a label may promise. There are no approved European health claims for BCAAs on their own. Protein does carry one: protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. So judge a product on grams, source and price per serving, and give any new routine two to three weeks of consistent use before you decide whether it fits your training.

They are called essential because your body cannot produce them, so they have to come from food or a supplement. They make up roughly a third of muscle protein, which is why they are popular in sports nutrition. Any protein-rich food gives you all three, so a supplement is a top-up rather than a replacement.
Probably not for the amino acids themselves. A 25 g scoop of whey already contains around 5 g of BCAAs, plus the other six essential amino acids that BCAAs leave out. If your protein intake across the day is solid, a separate BCAA product adds little. It becomes more useful for a different reason: a light, flavoured drink you can sip mid-session is easier on the stomach than a shake, and it helps some people drink more water while training.
It depends on when and where you take it. Powder gives you the most control over the dose, capsules travel best, ready to drink saves preparation.

Bear in mind that capsules often need six or more per serving.
There is no magic window. Amino acids from a drink reach your blood within about fifteen minutes, so before or during training both work. Most people sip a powder through a session, partly for the taste. If you train early and fasted, taking them beforehand is the most logical moment. Some products combine BCAAs with minerals, so if hydration is your real goal, compare them with plain electrolyte drinks before paying an amino acid price.
BCAAs are three amino acids. EAAs are all nine essential ones, including those same three. To build muscle protein, your body needs all nine present, so an EAA blend is the more complete option. BCAAs are cheaper per serving and easier to flavour, because fewer amino acids means less bitterness. If you want one amino product and your diet is not protein-rich, EAAs are usually the more sensible buy. If you already eat plenty of protein, BCAAs are mainly a training drink.
Many are, but not all, so the label decides. Amino acids can be made by fermenting plant material, which gives a vegan product. Others are produced from animal keratin or from hydrolysed animal protein, and some capsule shells contain gelatin. Look for a clear vegan or vegetarian statement rather than assuming. Free form amino acids from fermentation also tend to have a cleaner amino profile than blends built on hydrolysed soya protein, which is one reason we prefer them.
BCAA products only make sense on top of enough total protein, so it helps to know the baseline. The UK Reference Nutrient Intake is a minimum to prevent shortfall, not a target for training. Most UK adults already exceed it.

Source: British Nutrition FoundationYes. Most UK BCAA labels state that the product is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, simply because there is too little data for those groups. They are also intended for adults, not children. If you take prescribed medication, or you have a kidney or liver condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist first, since amino acid metabolism is handled by those organs. And stay within the serving on the pack: a bigger scoop does not do more work.
